Weapon type: Whips
An idea just came to my head.

I think the general consensus is that whips as a weapon type in PoE is a kickass idea that needs to come to fruition. A further thought on one my ideas about possible skills for whips in PoE would be: To help ensure balance for using a whip skill to "drain" life and/or mana from a target, the character should have to stand still. This would limit the use of this skill to prevent it from become to exploited. Of course, as I had mentioned before, having a limited time that a char could be attached to a target would help balance it out as well. Another skill idea I have for whip class weapons would be a "whirlwind" type skill. And yes I mean a skill similar to the Barb skill in D2. The animation would be simple too. This would be in keeping with the "open path" game style of PoE as, whips would be useful to nearly all character types. Summoners could acquire minions with a whip skill or gain or give buffs to existing minions. Melee characters could acquire a ranged attack without resorting to standard ranged weapons. Mage classes could gain considerable mana leech from whips "resource" draining skills. (The Evoker in Hellgate:London had a "Spectral Lash" skill that did this very thing). Ranged attackers get a really unique alternative to standard ranged weapons, especially if single-handled cross-bows were implemented for the Ranger in this game (like the Demon Hunter in D3). If they get the animation right something like this could be awesome :)
To differentiate it from other weapons you could make it deal maximum damage at a certain range, with damage dropping off against monsters that are farther away or too close. |

I didn't read all the post but this would definitely have to involve death animations with the whip (pulling heads off, limbs, and other creative effects).

I was thinking that a whip could be a "support" weapon more than a killing one. The comments before on buffing minions is certanily one thing it should do, as well as the other uses, ensnaring etc, but damage ought to be considerably lower than with deadlier weapons.
That said, disarming could be one of the effects of the weapon, and of course longish range, maybe some sort of pain debuff or slow? Hell, being able to grab and sling yourself to pillars and such would be imba, but sure would be cool. But yeah, whips would work best as a support/caster weapon to let the deal melee powerhouses do the killing... ...but damn, a dual-whip wielding warrior brings up some mental images... |
