I like this idea. Whips would be cool. How about also adding:

- Dart Gun

- Crossbow (Haven't seen one yet)

- One of those circular/star shaped blade thingos. =)

- Flail

- Throwing Knives

- Power Gloves

And more that I cannot think of right now hehe.

I was just playing a Duelist earlier, and every time I'd approach a hoard of monsters I'd be hacking away nonstop, but there always seemed to be this one zombie that wouldn't come into the fray.

I thought to myself, ya know what? This game could totally use an extra slot for throwing weapons under the character's equipment screen. In order for it to not replace bows maybe there could be a set number of charges for them (magical ones could have a rare affix that replenishes charges over time), or some sort of cooldown like say 20-30 seconds. I just want to be able to fling my hatchet into a timid monster's head.

Somebody also suggested that the 6th class (dex/intel) ought to have some sort of mastery akin to throwing items and having spells that are charged up from them. I thought that'd be a fun mechanic to play with, and it'd make that class very unique.

I agree.
Cybering - the next level ;)

I, for one, welcome our new whipping overlords.

And I shall coin the term: "Minions! Charge.....MENACINGLY!"
Strength - The ability to endure and overcome all hardships in life.

Courage - The ability to look at your past with no regrets, and your future with no fear or doubt.

Pride - The ability to accept yourself.

Yes, whips are rather...kinky...eh em. :)

I own several. :)

However, as a weapon in an ARPG such as this, if implemented correctly, whips could become a preferred weapon type for minion based characters.

Of course I could imagine melee characters using a whip for their off hand to stun & grapple mobs whilst they sliced them to bits with their sword hand.

Hell, the whip could even be used to snare and violently wrench towards the melee char a mob to be hacked to bit. Kinda like a grapple-gun effect. Think..Mortal Kombat's Scorpion "Get over here!"

Ownage!
New weapons does not hurt, but do we really need them?
LINUX!
The short answer....yes.

The problem with a whip is animating it so it doesn't look like total shit. In a game like this realism plays a pretty big part and implementing a believable looking whip would be kind of hard. Besides that you also have how well the weapon fits the theme of the game and if it serves any purpose that other weapons don't. Yeah sure they look cool, but if they don't offer anything that a sword wouldn't, then what is the point beyond "Hey check me out I use whips!"

I agree the animations may be a challenge and would be key for the whips coming off well for the player.

With the right animations that don't effect framerate would also be key. I am not sure how many frames each attack would take but the devs would have to experiment with what fit best in the games architecture and what fits the game's theme.

I believe my ideas have merit and should be taken seriously by the devs. This weapon type could open up quite a few possibilities, especially when one factors in elemental/magic effects that could be coupled with whip based attacks.
