Well, I've never said I was going to quit and then went back on it. But I think some of the people here would be honest about it and the ones that will exaggerate are probably folks I already don't pay much attention to.

Yep; I wasn't speaking about you at all, but rather the number of folk who tend to get over-dramatic over a lot of things.

It's simply because it wouldn't really change anything about the way I play other than I wouldn't avoid certain content when I was close to leveling up.

And yes, this is, gameplay-wise, the worst part of the penalty as it stands, as this is a truly VISIBLE effect on the game. A lot of other effects are harder to pin down; the effect on builds is speculative at best.

But... PoE is a game that's marked with a LOT of really dumb "metas" (or other things) that come about as players twist their gameplay AROUND what's there:

  • Poor boss loot and phased boss timers = "Boss skipp" meta
  • Rewards for farming a specific map consistently = "Shaped atlas" meta
  • Elder/Shaper-influence maps always better = "Elder blob" meta.
  • Inordinately good card drops in specific pre-map zones = Act 3 bot & Blood Aqueduct farm
  • Unenforced trading prices = Price-fixing scam meta
  • Lack of replies from sellers = "spam 20 different people and pray one replies" meta
  • Death EXP penalty = "don't do dangerous encounters until you ding" meta

These are just things that are annoying and don't really add to the game, but sprang up just because of "quirks" with how the game is.

The whole argument is completely pointless to begin with because we are talking about the developers who do their best to make leveling harder. Removing the only thing that makes it harder? hah, not in a million years. Still nice to see what the people who want it easy have to say though.

There's several things that make your statement 100% wrong:

  • The penalty doesn't "make it harder." No one who even comes close to winning the "race to 100" has died. There's no risk involved, just spamming UGS (which you can sleep through and not die) until you hit it.

  • In terms of slowing EXP progression, GGG has been pretty abysmal at slowing racers. In spite of trying to throw in a speed bump each time, the race to 100 is consistently over in about 5 days every league/race, and has been for years. (exception being Legacy League, where it was done in under 3 days, IIRC)

  • GGG has budged on stuff before. If you'd scroll up and some of the other stuff, there's a number of places where they swore up and down that it HAD to be in a broken manner, yet changed their tune. The game used to be based on desync, and used to only have FFA loot. Both were godawful old decisions that got fixed. The EXP death penalty we have (which currently does NOT affect gameplay outside of making players skip dangerous content until they have nothing to lose) is yet another one of these bad things in the game that can and should be fixed.
My guides: Summon Homing Missile (SRS) | Act II starter RF | Budget Oro's Flicker Strike
itt: people who are bad at game want game to be balanced around their bad play.

'if i put time in, i should be lvl 100, regardless of skill or if i deserved it or not. so what if i can't kill map bosses without dying? i'm just as good as havoc!'

also, participation trophies.

all characters should reach level 100 upon killing hillock. and we should get a legacy kaom's and glyph mark/loath bane/etc for passing the character creation screen.

Problem is there are not that many people who cant handle the penalty. Case in point: the lab and map drops are way more hated than the penalty yet GGG don't give 1 fck

Just curious but how many people would quit POE outright if they got rid of the SC death penalty?

Probably not outright, but it'd definitely be the beginning of the end. I'd get a level 100 in a league or finish pushing my 97 in standard. Next league I'd get bored really fast because death doesn't matter and quit early. Third league would probably be the point where I'd just completely stop, as playing a god mode sandbox game isn't all that fun.

That seems like an honest and fairly reasonable response. So, the only thing keeping you from hitting level 100 now is the death penalty?

this is a silly question, as there are literally only 2 variables here: playtime and deaths.

I disagree with both of those assertions but I wasn't talking to you and I won't debate what you think someone else might be thinking.

so you disagree with facts AND you won't debate with me while you quoted my post and made a post to me.

i mean, when you're disputing facts you have no debate, so...

No, you're just too antagonistic for my tastes, plus, as I said, I wasn't even talking to you. You also have a tendency to call opinions facts which I find annoying. But I'll respond anyway.

1. I don't think it's a silly question because I disagree with the premise that the death penalty is the only thing stopping his progress, as his post implies. I wanted to be sure I understood his position before I wrote a long response that might have been off base. Again, this was really not addressed to you so I'm not sure why you felt the need to respond and QUOTE ME in the process.

2. There are other factors that are involved in reaching level 100. Not the least of which is desire. Since the whole point of this thread is how removing the death penalty would be good or bad for the game I was engaging this player in further conversation on whether or not his premise that it would be bad was compelling.

Happy now? And I quoted you because you quoted me. It's a common practice in forum conversations.

FACT: the ONLY thing that reduces xp is dying.

FACT: the only variables are playtime and deaths

FACT: with infinite time, ALL players will reach level 100, regardless of ability
