I would fucking hope not.

If you check the ordaninces of many US towns/cities you will find things for public indecency, and yes you can belive that you could be arrested. Most may not enforce them strictly, but if someone is over the top they have them avaiable.

Free speech does not give a person the right to be a public asshole.

Free-to-play game communities always leave a lot to be desired. Learn to deal with it.

Well you can do like me:
I say hello all, when i logon. Then i hide global chat.
Ya i know i could answer questions and others, but the language sometimes are really rude / awfull.
When i have it open, i squelsh alot off rude people.
SO i guess i soon hit the limit for squelsh.

Edit: sorry, I'm being a smartarse obviously, and it's not entirely called for. I just find it really distasteful for anyone, especially a moderator, to highlight the possibility of someone being assaulted simply for speaking, without at all condemning such an act. Even if it was a fact of life (and I still don't agree that it is unless you're in a town full of nutjobs, in which case you should probably move), it's our job as responsible human beings to reject the facts of life if they're harmful, not just go "oh well, that happens".

I live in America as well, and here are some examples of good ways to get in trouble using "free speech":

Go into a bar, club, etc. Bonus points if it is a rural community. Start calling every girl there a slut, and every guy a desperate nerd. Expect to need medical treatment, and a bar full of people who all swear they didn't see who did it.

On a plane, turn to the passenger next to you, and start asking him questions (loudly) about whether it would be better to plant the bomb in the lavatory or closer to the wings.

Approach a police officer doing foot patrol. Start oinking. When they tell you to stop, inform them that you are paying their salary, and that means you can do whatever you want. Then imply that their momma gives bad blowjobs, but it was ok because she didn't charge you anything.

Freedom of Speech doesn't mean that you have the right to be an ass. And it doesn't mean that your "freedom" won't have repercussions. Sure, example one, you might get someone arrested for assault, but I doubt a jury would convict the assaulter after hearing testimony from everyone about what you said.
Example 2 will get you in BIG trouble, and probably a lifetime ban from US airways.
Example 3 will probably get you a 24 hour lockup (it is legal to arrest someone for up to 24 hours without charging them).
NewDude: I killed Brutus. Now I have no quest. So what now?
Guy: I guess there are people that NEED quests for direction.
Guy2: I always wonder how those people get through life.
GuyMontag: They get married. Wives are like quest-givers.

48 hours I thought

Edit. Sorry, There are a couple states looking at changing this. MO and OH I have found so far.

I also agree with the fact that using your right to speak does not wave your right to be a decent human being. Even most disagreements do not require direct attacks. The poeple we are talking about though, aren't in the kind of arguments were direct attacks are ever necessary though.

Ex. The best and second best people at any activity are arguing about who is better at that activity. This is a case where some direct attacks are ok. Statements like I am better than you because of this that and the other are ok. Mom's, penis's, and sexual orientation never necessary.

Of course I completely agree that there are useful limits to many, perhaps all freedoms, including speech. That's not disputed. What's disputed is acceptable means of enforcing those limits.

Over here, assault charges are based on, oddly enough, the fact of whether you assaulted someone (and extenuating circimstances have to be more extreme than "oh, a bunch of people were insulted") because as a society we declare that violence is simply not a valid solution to the problem of a lot of people being insulted. I kinda think that's a fairly important statement of priorities, but hey, have fun treating thuggery as a fact of life, I guess.

I don't agree... i've seen lot worse ones, there's a lot of cool people in PoE, questions are always answered by elders, there's trolling like everywhere...
... nothing
True literal and technical freedom would be anarchy and that really isn't good for any community or society in my opinion.

Also, you can always turn global chat off and/or ignore the chat if it is bothering you that much.
Another reason that the chat can be so bad is that right now, nobody has any.. incentive to be nice. Take an MMO for example, some degree of civility is a byproduct of the fact that you need other people, in order to play the game. However, in PoE you don't need anyone, and it's free. So if you're of a certain mindset you can just hop on and rant/scream at people to get your kicks. Really isn't anyone can do to stop that.

Ideas like.. lock new players from global chat until level 10... are good, but then you're forcing legit players to have to trudge through the early game in some kind of "newbie" chat which will be full of all the ranters. I would be afraid that situation would just drive off desirable clientele.

I think filters should (and will) be put in place to remove obvious hate speech.. can't see a reason why you would need to use racial slurs for example. Also, GGG has confirmed that they are aware of the issue and in-game moderators are planned.

I can't wait till we can make our own leagues :)
