Tencent & Charan

Nominally, I should think.

I'd forgotten you'd spent time there recently. I haven't been back in years. I'm not surprised to hear the ubiquity of Tencent is very real. I like that you remained wary of WeChat's utility because no matter how user friendly and awesome it might be, if it's the only app in town, that's...scary.

And this is coming from someone who is fiercely brand-loyal most of the time. I like having choice but will typically stick with what works for me. But it's SO important that we have that choice.

...And to bring this a little more back on-topic, I think when it comes to ARPGs we always will. An old Exile contacted me last night, well-known big supporter name around here a while ago but mostly absent these days, asking how I felt about Wolcen because he's over PoE (especially now) but he wants something meaty he can build-craft and mull over for days before even hitting the game itself. I had to confess that Wolcen for all its smoothness isn't that game. Last Epoch may be one day, but it's only the dream of it at this point.

At that point, this dear friend compared PoE to City of Heroes, as something he knows will never be replaced and is essentially impossible to recapture...but that he pines for nonetheless. Man, that comparison struck home. There were other super hero MMOs, like DCUO, but they never reached CoH's heights.

While PoE might currently have the monopoly on ARPGs, that won't last. But there'll never be another PoE, for better or worse. That which follows should build on what PoE has brought to the table, though. I find that exciting. :)
WeChat is the only game in town there, but not used when one doesn't want to be noticed. Yes it would be scary to live in China and not want to think openly.

Certainly, the door is now open for a dynasty to emerge. Let's hope does.

You're making no sense at all. I never said nor implied Charan lives with his parents, nor do I know who Charan is.

Just like in my original post - stop assuming things, because most likely - you are wrong.

Just FYI, Charan is 鬼殺し. Who has been, for much of the life of the game, an extremely prolific and visible community member here on the forums; and a long time supporter of GGG and of their approach to the game and to business.

(Long messy run-on sentence, sorry)

None of us in this thread are claiming the sky is falling. Most of us (here in this thread) assume that the future holds primary "business as usual" for GGG and for PoE (or at least the appearance thereof).

What we're discussing in this thread are the physiological implications of the process of creating a game (or any piece of art (or "art" if you prefer)) and then being subjected to the various conflicting whims of the consuming public. We're also discussing our discomfort with the actions and history of the Chinese company Tencent, and what they do both in terms of business, and morally (especially inside China).

Assuming that we're all ignorant of what we're discussing is foolish on your part. There's plenty of comments and analysis of Tencent out there on the internet from perfectly reputable sources. We don't "know" but that doesn't mean we can't educate ourselves, and make educated guesses based on what information is actually available.

And more specifically, we're discussing Charan's views on the subject in particular, because he's been such a prolific and prominent community member, and he's been kind enough to respond in this thread (which, if you'll note from the title, actually requests his views on the subject).

Not everyone can link the Han Dynasty wars to Tencent across 2000 years of history. And include "toilet" while doing so. :)

The long version of Red cliff was pretty excellent!

The Netflixs versions are 2.5 hours each. One is theatrical release and the other the international release.

I have a 4.5 hour version on my computer I downloaded a few years ago. I liked that one best. It is subtitled.

I will look at the link you posted too. Thanks.

Oops. My excuse, subtlety can be difficult to read on an internet forum. :p

I fully support GGG in the idea of selling parts of the company in order to receive the required funds to extend the game's content, however i do not support the decision of selling 80% to a money greedy company like Tencent, i stopped playing league of legends because of tencent, same thing might happen with path of exile, tencent turns everything it touches to shit

So a while before all this, I started to read Three Kingdoms

Just out of interest, do you read in Chinese or in English? (I am a native Chinese speaker who has lived in Australia for 11 years and have always wondered what the English translated versions are like.)

This just made me think of an other Chinese classic - Water Margin (Tale of the Marshes). An interesting comparison to the TencentGGG situation when you come to think about it.

BTW - Loved your sword Charan, had a lot of fun playing with it in Abyss League. :)
And Europe's GDPR has just gone live...

That is a frighteningly astute observation concerning POE and CoH. Those older gamers like myself all have games that have gone defunct or grown outdated that we know will never be replicated. CoH (and even CoV) is one such game for me. To think that POE is possibly on the same track now that it has been purchased by Tencent is a depressing thought. I am hopeful it does not come to that but cynical enough to know that it may. If worse comes to worst, the real questions will become how fast will it occur and how painful will the death throes be?

Despite all that, I'm ready to start the new league...

Fantastic book. I have read that book a few times. Love the story and historyof the Han Dynasty Wars in early China.

Also pretty sure that I played a few times partying with you in Guild Wars 1. Played that game since beta. Still one of my favorite games I ever played.
