Despite what GGG says, if you look up the history of Tencent you know POE is doomed. Only a matter of time.

I wish you people would bring up specific examples instead of just saying they're terrible

The most prominent one would be Paragon. It was a 3rd person moba. Sounds similar to a different game they own? Yep, league of legends. Apparently, they didn't want to have a rivalry between their own games, so before this could happen, they forced changes. Faster gameplay, smaller maps, overall shorter matches. The gameplay became significantly different than what it used to be, making a lot of players quit and eventually causing paragon to shut down.
Someone in off-topic wrote a complete breakdown of it all a while ago.. Pretty interesting read, though quite long.

Edit: it was Charan who wrote about it, main conten was from reddit though. Seems like his greatest fears regarding this game became reality. Here's the link: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2001906

I was just considering this.

The funny thing is I don't really distrust Tencent because i don't know them as a company. On the other hand, I know they have a LOT of money.

For Chris to sell his dream, he must now also have a LOT of money.

I bought supporter packs for the money to go to the devs of this Indie game I love, not to some mega-billionaire company.

Regardless of nothing changes, I don't see myself buying supporter packs anymore. In my head all I hear is "what's the point, they already got/are getting paid?"

It's a stupid way to look at it, but for some reason I can't shake the thought process.

It's like supporting a local deli... but then the guy tells you actually we're owned by Wal-Mart. For some damn reason it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I don't want glorified Wal-mart sandwiches anymore.

I know I'm weird.

The contrary of this is the obvious: If other people feel this way and support less, what happens when Tencent is desperate to make money? Can and will they shut it down? Will they change it to the P2W circus that the Chinese version of the game is?

Jeez I feel so torn.
Don't panic.

Remember that there already is a Chinese POE (distributed by Tencent) and, ultimately, that's the one that they (Tencent) care about (they fiddle with it a bit, it already has a few different features than iPOE and their own cash shop).
So, more likely than not, iPOE will remain unfazed by this acquisition.

Specific Example

The Chinese gaming market in general is a horrifying slushpit of Skinner boxes, blatant and undisguised pay to win, and shoddy design. The Chinese government and its laws regarding the way businesses have to operate if they want to do business in China is even worse. Nobody gets into the Chinese gaming market without stanking up their waders, and we can only hope and pray that Chris and co. have the stones to back up all their "no no, really, the sky is totally not falling!" promises.

Because having played Champions Online, which was similarly acquired by Perfect World (a very similar company from the same geographical sphere)...that game went completely to shit within a year of being Perfect World'd. It's not remotely worth playing anymore, which is sad. I'd really prefer for Path of Exile to avoid that fate, because there's nothing else in the market that can replace Path.

Sad, sad day.

It was a great run and the only company i have spent over $500 on.

I will not spend any more money on this company till they can reassure me somehow this is not going to be a p2w or cash cow for Tencent.

Very, Very Sad day.

I wish i knew about this a week earlier i just bought a Supported (tencent) pack.
I love people who think they should have any say in where their money goes after they use it to pay for a product. So cute.

I knew this was gonna happen sooner than later thinking a company that value economy above all else in their game wound sell at first opportunity when some hundreds of millions waved in front of their face... Plus their cheesy gambling addict boxes to minors even. Can't blame them really. Idea of starting a company is to make money..doh.

Guess they don't need my money anymore with "one of the largest companies in the world" financing them.
