How is grinding 1 month to finish a character over 2 days a "self-punishment" or "masochism"?

Some people enjoy significance in the journey you know.

Pretty easy to find your own shit, just look in the bowl before you flush. Simples.

You're very quickly approaching ignorable levels of pointless antagonism across the board. Which bothers me, because I said I'd never do that, but god damn you're trying your best here.

I laid out very clearly why it's masochistic, and you completely missed it. I know it's a lot of words but take your time. Implicitly accusing me of not 'enjoying the journey' is pretty fucking stupid given I'm infamous for replaying core game over and over and over instead of getting addicted to the treadmill of Mapping, isn't it?

If you're still struggling after a more thorough read-through of what I said, I'll provide a TL;DR for you. But only if.

Edit: what exactly does 'grinding 1 month to finish a character over 2 days' even mean?

I feel compelled to point out that when Boem said 'the journey' he most likely meant the journey of finding gear and pushing through all the tiers of the end game. Not the story mode journey.

And I'm with him there. For example, about 9 minutes ago now I just found a koams, and I'm playing flashback SC SSF. Super excited because I know how rare it is to drop. If the mode had increased drop rates, I wouldn't be nearly as excited.

I for one am glad SSF has the same drop rates, otherwise it would feel cheap to me.

I think the definitive moment was when SSF was announced as an official game mode and it had no adjustment to item drops at all. ANY other game developer would have sought balance here: okay, so you're cutting yourself off from trade, naturally you deserve better drops.

But GGG stuck to their now antiquated law that no league should be 'easier' than Standard, and obviously making better drops in a SSF mode would be 'easier'. To counteract that, they put in a 'migrate' option -- if you DO find something of real value on SSF, you can always 'migrate' that character to the real game and trade it away. With the migration function, GGG could not in good conscience muck with the drop rates on SSF because then people would just play in SSF, take advantage of the superior drop rates, migrate their characters and enter the market with an advantage.

Why they needed to put in a migration function is beyond me -- people who willingly play SSF are, in my experience, quite committed to the concept. Most play account-bound SSF, as in they can mule anything they find to other characters, which means drops that aren't really 'useful' for one character can be for another, even if you can't trade them away. I'm willing to bet most SSF players would have gladly taken a drop rate increase proportionate to the loss of trade access (whatever that might be) in exchange for the inability to 'migrate' anything from SSF, making it effectively a void league that would never filter into the shitshow that is Standard's economy. Very much willing to bet it.

So this very unusual implementation of SSF taught us two things about GGG, things we already strongly suspected but had not had confirmed:

1) they are so committed to the idea of trading in PoE as a natural part of the experience they view SSF in PoE as self-punishment/self-handicapping/masochism but couldn't admit openly it so called it 'an optional challenge' instead;

and

2) they believe that everyone has their price when it comes to giving up a challenge. I suspect the migration function is there in case you find a Mirror of Kalandra on SSF. Who wouldn't migrate THAT? Well, I wouldn't. I've had Mirrors given to me by the game in Descent and didn't once go, gosh, I wish this was Standard. It was just another item in that mode, and in SSF it'd be just another item too. If you're playing with the market in mind, you've no business on SSF in the first place.

In short, SSF is a joke on PoE and it's a joke purely because GGG never once took it seriously.

So no, I_NO, you will never find shit rather than trade because GGG don't want that. And you've been dancing to their tune for years. And paying for it. In all sorts of ways.

Right on! I would never play trade league if I could grind gear for whatever build I planed to go with.
For me, SSF is finding that item that I can use (see utility as noted above)
If I found a Koam's right now, it would be useless for my build.
I also agree that the migration function is counter-intuitive to the whole concept.
