Chop Finale .... ROLL DAY~
I just wanted to say thank you to all of the folks that contributed to this thread. It was in my opinion one of the most insightful, mature debate threads that I have come across out of the 1,000's of thread across many different games that I have played.
I freely admit that I'm one of those players that Chop touched on when he said that he belives that 70% of the player base does not even understand the prefix/sufix deal with the items in the game. The 2 points that I would like to put my agreement behind in peticular are: The main point from what I understand of Chop's is the upgrading of the chance to boost the mid range items. Because using myself as a example I use a very subpar build, which I greatly enjoy playing and while I was able to move through all the current difficulties I could not for the life of me do any type of clearing in Chaos. This all changed when as ghOun described. Average Joe(being me) was lucky enough to get a 6 socket chest to drop. Now it was a white 4 link chest that after using a total of 4 Armour scraps 1 Alchemy orb 14 chomatic orbs and 2 fusing orbs and 3 chaos orbs I ended up with Unavailable Now even though the stats are far far from perfect it instantly gave me the ability to now solo farm chaos. This of course greatly increased my enjoyment in the game and gives me a chance at obtaining more currency/items to gain better equipment through trading. This also ties in with Chop's main point of increasing the chance at getting better mid range items with keeping the godly items as the possible dream plausible( i.e the carrot on the stick) This I can say without a shadow of doubt at least based on my personal experiance will keep me as a player interested and playing the game for a much longer time. Most of us hopefully play games for the fun and challenge, If orbs were to be ever added into the game that would enable us to all craft godly items then the fun and challenge would be removed. This of course would lead to many players leaving the game because the fun and challenge would be crafted right out of the game. As one of the players in the 70% range all I ask for is to be given better odds at obtaining decent gear so that we have the oppertinuity and means to keep chasing after the carrot. Because after all that I have read on the forums and in global as it stands now I doubt I will ever get lucky enough again to obtain a 6 link chest. re:gh0un, you fail to understand statistics. A single orb indeed does not guarantee anything, but a mass of orbs approaches unity. If you actually believe in "lucky" and "unlucky", then I'm sorry.
re:Chop, I'm saying that the labels are overloaded. They should mean `time spent by player in game` but often carry much more connotation than that. It's less ambiguous and a lot less inflammatory to just say "the person that plays 2 hours a day" instead of "the casual player". re:TribePariah, yes, the end result of monotonic crafting increases is an unending power creep that is a bugbear to balance. This leaves the devs in one of two unenviable places: either design new challenges that have a very hefty cost of entry (thus losing the people that don't want to play for months just to see a new area) or ignore the cries of the people that play a lot (and thus lose the whales that generate income). re:velrac, I see you put Item Rarity and Item Quantity in your 6link, so it really did not enable you to do anything you could not do before. :P Good job on the 6link with 2 fusings, that's quite rare. |

I apologize I had swapped those in for a couple of fast runs of Felshire. I use life gain on hit and added lightning damage when running Chaos

" So the design philosophy question becomes "where do you want your game's player attrition to take place." |

" I dont fail to understand statistics at all. Im gonna bet with you that creating the best item in PoE via the usage of alteration->regal->exalted is a lot harder than winning the lottery, or creating the best item by just using alch/chaos. You could amass 10000 lottery tickets, and still never approach unity during your lifetime, and the same applies to creating the best item in PoE. If you combine low dropchance with low probability of useful stuff happening (especially with that many affixes with such wide spread values) you quickly surpass the lottery in terms of statistical difficulty. As soon as a % value becomes too small, it is all about being lucky/unlucky (if you only have limited resources: time to play isnt infinite). If you dont believe in that concept, you probably should go and buy some lottery tickets right now. Last edited by gh0un#3019 on Mar 10, 2012, 12:47:06 PM
