What's the point of stack sizes?
|
I can't be the only one who thinks that being able to hold only 10 orbs in a stack is extremely limited and unnecessary. What's the point of this? Is it just to make players buy more stash tabs? Because it really serves no purpose at all... it's not like item sizes where it forces players to make decisions on which items to pick up. Here it's just to make players fill up their stashes...
I think the game would be much better if they increased the stack size of every orb to 99 for example, or just outright removed them. But this is simply my opinion. Discuss. The pen is mightier than the sword, yet it is more permanent than a pencil.

GCP stacks to 20 which is the max quality of a gem? Not sure where they got the other stack sizes though, seems random. :)

This game has limited inventory space and they make it so you can have maxed stacks or infinite stacks of items. you must manage inventory as well as survival. It fits into the 'cutthroat' feel of the game, where everything has a reason or its just wasted space.

" Inb4 someone rudely tells you to read the OP again. Edit: OP does have a point, since the only place where you are going to be storing large amounts of currency is in your stash, and since you can buy stash space or make mule accounts, stash space is not supposed to be a carefully managed resource. " But this isn't an inventory management issue at all. Everyone is going to pick up currency and nobody is going to drop them because they don't have enough space in their inventory. And everyone keeps it in the stash. So why exactly do the stack sizes exist if not to make players fill up their stashes? The pen is mightier than the sword, yet it is more permanent than a pencil.

" I've dropped currency or couldnt pick it up because my inventory was full. I had to TP and come back later(thank god I was solo) and it was still there for me after I cleared my bags. Had I not been solo, it would have brought a very dark and cutthroat feel to the game, which GGG said they wanted. " OK. And what does this have to do with stack sizes? With unlimited stacks this would've been exactly the same. This whole "dark and cutthroat" crap doesn't really explain the reasoning behind the stack limits. The pen is mightier than the sword, yet it is more permanent than a pencil.

Hmm, now that I think about it, the rationale behind limiting stack sizes could be to reinforce the idea that currency orbs are items, as opposed to abstract currency units such as gold (ie just a number). It's like the difference between having coins in your pocket versus money on a credit card.
Granted, this really doesn't make much difference to gameplay, but I guess it does contribute to the flavour of the game. Alteration Orb Union Local #7 "Holding the line, on sixteen to one!" Last edited by VoxelSquid#1095 on Feb 28, 2013, 3:30:31 PM

" Never thought of it like that. +1 |

" You don't need to add extremely limited stack sizes to give players the idea that orbs are items. And even if this were the case, is it really worth it? Making players waste the only tabs they have to store currency? Also, if this were the case, they shouldn't be stackable at all.
