I'm not really getting the sense that's there's ever anything beyond the honor system at work here in either direction.

If the seller doesn't protect himself, you can just ignore him and walk through a portal and not pay him anything, right? If he does protect himself, then he can take your money, but not give you access. So either way, someone can get screwed (meaning someone is going to get screwed eventually).

I'm not seeing an option here unless GGG adds in a tool that allows both buyer and seller protection with regard to portal service.

Scamming is against their policy; you can report people to get your stuff back and they do punish people for it.

Omg this is adorable. While it is true that GGG have at least once (perandus league) banned egregious repeated-offense scammers, they never, will never, and even have a *policy* to never return items to people, under any circumstances. Doesn't matter if you were completely scammed, doesn't matter if it was a fucking server error. No items will be returned.

Also, read the terms of service, scamming isn't actually banned--GGG just has discretionary ban power baked into the rules (as they should).

Were GGG to start banning people based on fairly common ideas of 'scamming' and 'exploitation' you'd see a ridiculous drop in player population.

That said, this is definitely closer to a scam than a simple rip-off or pricing dispute. It's pretty much theft. GGG, being the good reddit users they are, are probably already figuring out how to deal with it.
