[2.6] - Nova Ethereal Knives Pathfinder - Budget As Possible!

Nova Ethereal Knives Pathfinder
Non-stop Flask Chugging & Speed

Introduction
Guide and Demo Video
https://youtu.be/pbuLBy-WLkg

Hey exiles, do you want to go fast and learn how to play the piano with your flasks at the same time? Well, you have come to the right build guide! This build takes advantage of the Ring of Blades unique threshold jewel, which adds projectiles to the Ethereal Knives skill gem and makes it fire in a 360 degree Nova around your character.

This makes using the Ethereal Knives skill much smoother, as you no longer have to worry about firing it in a small cone in front of your character! With this jewel, we can play more aggressively, charging into packs and killing them from within rather than skirting their edges. Now before we go into the guide any further, let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of the build.

I will say first that this build is a Chaos Inoculation build, but it can be run on a budget, only requiring good Energy Shield gear and a Spell Damage variant of the Vessel of Vinktar.

This is definitely a build for intermediate to advanced players that have an understanding of how to build and leveling a CI build, as well as some currency built up already.

Pros & Cons

Pros
- Very fast for clearing maps
- Easy, simple and fun playstyle
- A lot of character strength from just Flasks
- Super satisfying freeze shattering with Hatred and Herald of Ice
- Chaos Inoculation, Ghost Reaver and Vaal Pact -- #meta

Cons
- Somewhat Expensive (Around 3 Exalted for budget end game gear including Vinktars, not recommended as a starter character)
- Weak on sustained single target (Is completely fine for all map bosses with level 19/20 gems on a 5L)
- Need flasks up for damage, meaning this won’t be good for Guardians or Shaper

Mention: I would like to mention Joshie's Gaming and Fitness! for reference and inspiring making a budget as possible version of the build for EK Nova (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDxUuM1zzSc). I instead try to use very few expensive uniques as possible to get the build going and still be very strong for mapping in high end content!

Class and Ascendancy Choice
Ascendancy Comparisons

The plan is to go for Critical Strikes to scale our Spell Damage as much as possible, so we will require getting and sustaining Power Charges, as well as getting a lot of Critical Strike Chance. We also want to be going really fast for clearing maps, while having a lot of survivability! Man, that’s a lot to cover! In this regard, there are a couple choices to be made for this build’s Class and Ascendancy.

Ranger Pathfinder
Pros
- Always have flasks up
- Elemental Immunities while flasks are up
- Great Offense and Defense from enhanced flasks
- Very fast Movement Speed
- Free poison if we want to get better single target

Cons
- Always need a flask up for power and benefits
- Not great for sustain on bosses
- No inherit way for Power Charge generation

Ranger Raider
Pros
- Frenzy Charges and generation
- Elemental Immunities while at Maximum Frenzy Charges
- Fast Attacks and Movement speed

Cons
- Can’t get all the Frenzy Charges from the Passive Tree
- No inherit way for Power Charge generation
- Can’t keep flasks up all all the time, especially on bosses

Shadow Assassin
Pros
- Inherit Power Charge generation
- Good Critical Strike scaling
- Benefits for Poison damage

Cons
- No inherit defenses
- Can’t keep flasks up all all the time, especially on bosses
- Not as fast as Pathfinder

Witch Occultist
Pros
- Inherit Power Charge generation
- Great benefits to Energy Shield
- Some extra pack clearing with Chaos Explosions

Cons
- Can’t keep flasks up all all the time, especially on bosses
- Not as fast as Pathfinder

Class and Ascendancy Choice

Now the goal for me was to create a very strong and fast map clearing character with this build, rather than a pure boss killer. In this respect, I will be wanting to go as fast as possible! This meant that the Ranger Pathfinder would be the best option. This class provides great bonuses to flask effectiveness, duration and uptime. This means that we will be able to always have our flasks up and be very strong offensively and defensively! We can also grab the free poison while a flask is in use, since we are mainly physical damage, to help scale our single target damage if needed. The only thing we will need to worry about will be Power Charge Generation. The other two classes that were considered for this build are the Ranger Raider, Shadow Assassin and the Witch Occultist.

The Ranger Raider allows for Elemental Immunities, easy Frenzy Charge generation and Attack and Movement Speed for getting around faster. However, I didn’t consider this worth it since the Pathfinder also gets Elemental Immunities, and increased Attack and Movement Speed from flask effectiveness, with the ability to generate Frenzy Charges once you obtain the correct gearing. Also with our tree pathing, we would not be able to get all of the Frenzy Charges on the tree, limiting our Ascendancy bonuses.

The Shadow Assassin would perform better for single target, gaining better poison damage and having Power Charge sustain. However, we would lose our flask effectiveness and sustain with this class, losing much of our defenses while not gaining any from the Ascendancy.

The Witch Occultist also has inherent Power Charge generation, but doesn’t gain much offense for single target or better clear speeds than the Pathfinder. It does gain many bonuses for Energy Shield for defensiveness, but like the other classes, it loses out on flask effectiveness and sustain if you don’t keep your speed up in maps.

Passive Trees
Leveling and Final Trees

Now since this is a Chaos Inoculation build, we will have to level as a hybrid character, getting many Life/Energy Shield nodes on the tree and Life on gear to begin with. Here I will provide trees for leveling in this manner along with the appropriate levels, when to respec into CI and the final tree for around level 90. You will have enough respec points from the quests to do this transition without spending Orbs of Regret.

Keystone Explanations

Chaos Inoculation
This keystone is the bread and butter of this build. Since we are in the upper right hand portion of the tree, this is the best way that we can scale our effective Life pool. We also become immune to Chaos Damage and are able to easily get 8k+ Energy Shield with budget Energy Shield gear. This makes us able to sustain most 1-shot damage territory.

Ghost Reaver
This Keystone allows us to apply our Life Leech to our Energy Shield, which is the main way we will be sustaining and replenishing our Energy Shield after being damaged.

Vaal Pact
This Keystone is very important for our Leech, as it applies it instantly and we won’t have to worry about Leech rate caps. As we do not use Life Regeneration, it is a pure benefit to pick it up, since our Energy Shield Recharge mechanic will still work after the cooldown period.

Ascendancy Progression

Nature’s Boon → Master Alchemist → Veteran Bowyer → Master Herbalist (for better single target) or Nature’s Adrenaline (for clear speed)

The final ascendancy will depend on your link setup. I recommend going for Master Herbalist if you are on a 5L or if you want to run up to t15 maps for single target damage. I found Ethereal Knives is strong enough to drop the poison when I got a 6L for most map bosses, and decided go for more clear speed, so I repec’d into Nature’s Adrenaline.

Gem Links
Spoiler

Here are all the Gem links, with supports in order of importance:

Body Armour
Ethereal Knives - Controlled Destruction - Pierce - Spell Echo - Increased Critical Strikes - Increased Critical Strike Damage or lvl 4 Empower

Inc. Critical Damage does more damage than a lvl 3 Empower

Helmet
Orb of Storms - Power Charge on Crit - Curse on Hit - Warlord’s Mark

Here we will do two things, have a way to take care of single target (or hexproof) power charge generation and curse the target with Warlord’s Mark, providing Life and Mana leech for sustained fights.

Boots
Increased Duration - Vaal Haste - Cast When Damage Taken - Summon Lightning Golem

Getting 2R1G on intelligence gear is tough, so you may not use the CwDT and self cast the Golem.

Gloves
Shield Charge - Faster Attacks - Fortify - Flame Dash

Getting 2R1G on intelligence gear is tough, for these gloves, they are fairly low Intelligence requirement, so you can get this through Vorici doing 1R or force the 2R1G.

Weapon
Herald of Ice - Curse on Hit - Assassin’s Mark

Here is is required that we run Curse on Hit Assassin’s Mark for our Power Charge generation while mapping and killing packs of monsters.

Shield
Hatred - Discipline - Enlighten (lvl 3, can be corrupted. Lvl 2 is possible, but will have uncomfortable unreserved mana)

Gearing
Main Gear

”Uniques”

To start, I will first list the required gear uniques for this build:

The Eye of Chayula is so that we never get stunned. Stun mechanics are based on your Life pool, that is the theoretical Life pool you have without CI, which we have very little of. This means we will be getting stunned all the time, especially when running into packs of monsters.

Brinerot Whalers (http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Brinerot_Whalers) are best in slot boots, and are recommended. If not you can get some rare boots, as shown in the next section.

As mentioned in the Leveling portion, I recommend using The Gull for your helmet, as the power it provides your character is insane.

Optional
You can instead opt for a Valyrium ring, which bases your stun threshold on your Energy Shield rather than Life. This means you can still get stunned, but much less frequently. This may be a good option if you can balance out your resistances, and then use a Karui Charge or a Victario's Acuity amulet.

The Victario’s would allow you to generate Power and Frenzy Charges while killing monsters with buffs to your projectiles, the the Karui Charge would allow for more pure Projectile Damage and Projectile Speed.

Shadows and Dust http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Shadows_and_Dust are a good pair of alternative gloves for the Critical Strike bonuses, Rampage and Unholy Might for more Poison Scaling Damage. You will want to make sure to get Attack Speed on your weapon if you choose these gloves.

”Rares”

Now for the Rare gear.

Gloves

There is only one piece of rare gear you will need to specifically get, and that is Sorcerer Gloves that are crafted with an Essence of Insanity. This essence provides the affix of “Socketed gems have 16% more Attack Speed”. This is invaluable for our movement skill which we use to traverse the map and makes it much faster. Since the rest of our gear is Rare gear, we can easily fill out our resistances there, so you only have to look for a cheap pair of these gloves on PoE trade with some decent Energy Shield, at or above 130 Energy Shield.

Chest

For a chest, you will be wanting to look for something over 700 ES with an Elemental Resistance or two. You can either buy a 5L or try and link your own, this is up to your financial status.

Boots

For boots, you will want at least 25% Movement Speed, and some Elemental Resistances. Boots with more than 130 ES will be sufficient. You will also want to get the enchant ‘% Damage leeched as Life and Mana’ on your boots. You can get this enchant from Cruel or Merciless lab easily yourself by running it quickly until you get it, or pay the premium for it already on a pair of boots. I have the Cruel .4% version of this enchant and it works just fine. This works mainly as a backup source of Life and Mana leech for when your Vinktars is not up, which should almost be never.

Shield

For a shield you will want to look for a base with around 350-400 Energy Shield, with ‘Critical Strike Chance for Spells’ as well as some Elemental Resistances. Getting ‘Spell Damage’ is also great, but will cost a lot to get that with the other affixes.

Belt

For belts, it is recommended to get a Crystal Belt with around 100 total Energy Shield, Elemental Resistances and some sort of Flask affix on it. This is just a simple crystal belt that I got after using a few chaos, it worked for my needs at the time. Now you won’t be able to use this base until level 79, so in the meantime just look for a good rustic or chain belt with similar affixes.

Rings

Here we will just need to look for Energy Shield and Resistances! Very simple and affordable rings. You can also look to get Diamond Ring bases for more Critical Strike Chance. If you are also in need of an Attribute, you can look for that on your ring slot.

Weapon

For a weapon, you will want a dagger, with ‘Critical Strike Chance for Spells’, ‘Spell Damage’ and ‘Critical Strike Multiplier’ as a base, as we only care about Spell Affixes. Getting ‘Attack Speed’ is great for our movement skill, but will be expensive on top of these affixes.

Jewels

Uniques

For this build, we will only need one unique jewel and that is the Ring of Blades threshold jewel for Ethereal Knives. This jewel will be socketed in the tree right above the Ranger starting point.

Rares
For the remaining Jewel sockets, we will socket rare jewels. We will want the following priorities for Rare Jewels:
Jewel Affix Priority
- % Spell Damage while holding a Shield
- % Projectile Damage
- % Critical Strike Multiplier
- % Physical Damage
- % Increased Attack Speed
- % Increased Cast Speed
- % Increased Maximum Energy Shield

Flasks

Uniques

The main and required flask for this build will be the Vessel of Vinkar. This flask is required to sustain our mana pool, as well as getting insane amounts of Life leech. We can simply use the ‘Adds X-X Lightning Damage to Spells’ variant of this flask and have no issues.

As with most other builds, we will take advantage of Atziri’s Promise flask for its great damage and Life leech bonuses.

If you do have more currency to spare, you can get a Taste of Hate flask. This flask will not only provide more damage, but more defense by converting physical damage taken into cold damage that will be mitigated by your elemental resistances.

Utility

For the remaining flasks, we will want to make sure we have a Basalt Flask for some defensive mitigation (Taste of Hate would replace this flask). A Quicksilver with the ‘of Adrenaline’ suffix for moving around really fast and finally a Diamond flask to ensure we are always performing critical strikes. Make sure to roll Bleed and Curse removal on either of your Basalt and Diamond Flasks.

Leveling The Build
Spoiler

As this build is going to be CI in the endgame, we will have to be leveling the build as hybrid based, picking up Life nodes and hybrid Life/Energy Shield nodes as we level. Once we get to level 69, we will be able to respec into CI as shown in the passive trees. This is because top tier Energy Shield bases such as the Vaal Regalia and Hubris Circlet are equipable at this level, and are the base items you should be getting for your Energy Shield gear. To ease the leveling process until this point, we can take advantage of many uniques. I will list these in order of which you can equip them.

”Uniques”

As per usual, I always start every character with the Wanderlust/Goldrim combination. This provides a good start for your elemental resistances, as well as good Movement Speed and Freeze Immunity.

The newly buffed Lochtonial Caress gloves make for very great leveling gloves, as you get some Life as well as a 10% chance to get a random charge type upon slaying monsters. This means you will regularly have Endurance/Frenzy/Power charges while leveling, adding some good Offense and Defense.

Of course, as with every spell caster build, start with some Lifesprig wands. These are strong as they give you a +1 level to socketed spell gems, which is a fair bit more damage as spells scale their base damage from gem levels.

The Karui Ward is an excellent amulet for leveling this build, as it provides so many benefits for our projectiles and Movement Speed and can be equipped at level 5.

The Belt of the Deceiver makes for a nice leveling belt with Life and Elemental Resistances and can be equipped very early at level 20.

At level 38 I highly recommend getting the Gull unique and recommend using this as your endgame helmet. This unique is currently very very overpowered and provides insane affixes for its level requirement. Not only do you get a great Life roll, Cold Resistance and implicit Energy Shield, but you also get the chance of getting lesser Shrines from killing monsters. These Shrines act as lesser versions of their bigger Domination shrine counterparts. These shrines appear frequently and are amazing for leveling and even the endgame!

Finally, at level 46 you can equip a Belly of the Beast. I recommend just picking up a non-linked Belly for extra Life and resistances for leveling as it provides much needed boost to your Life pool. They are currently very cheap for just around 2-3 chaos.

”Leveling

I suggest starting with and using Ethereal Knives all the way through the character progression. It is very Mana intensive, so you will have to run a Mana Flask for leveling until you get Mana leech later on. You will of course want to socket Ethereal Knives in one of your Lifesprigs. As you level, you can grab and socket Added Fire and Added Lighting support gems to your Ethereal Knives until you get access to the main support gems for the setup.

For assistance on single target, you can grab a Flame Totem and socket that in your other Lifesprig with Added Cold and Added Lightning support gems. Instead of Flame Totem, you can grab a Blade Vortex at level 12 and socket it with the same supports as your Ethereal Knives. Don’t forget to get a Flame Dash at level 10 for your leveling movement skill! Around level 12, you will also be able to socket the Ring of Blades jewel above the Ranger start, getting you the 360 degree Ethereal Knives Nova!

Once you reach level 18, you can setup your Ethereal Knives with Controlled Destruction and Faster Casting. If you choose to use Blade Vortex, I recommend the same links. You can also take advantage of Herald of Ash and Herald of Ice for some more damage whilst leveling. At level 24 you will want to drop Herald of Ash for Hatred.

Once you can equip The Gull at level 38, I recommend that you now socket your Ethereal Knives in this setup, now using the main progression of support gems: Ethereal Knives - Controlled Destruction - Pierce - Spell Echo. This setup should work for clearing zones and basic monsters all the way until your final gear setup. For single target, you can continue to use Flame totem support, or Blade Vortex just swapping the Faster Casting for Spell Echo in your Lifesprigs. You can also choose to use Slower Projectiles in place of Pierce in your Ethereal Knives setup.

From here, you will just want to follow the unique item and passive tree progression I have listed out, making sure to use proper Life and Utility flasks as well as looking out for decent Life and Hybrid based gear. Once you reach level 69, this is when you will want to repec following the provided tree and start equipping your Energy Shield gear as well as using the Discipline Aura.

As a side note: leveling CI builds can be tough. You have to make sure to have proper Life and Utility Flasks, as well as getting as much Life in the tree and on gear to make it through! You will definitely die if you are new to this leveling strategy, but fear not! It gets so much nicer in the endgame, so stick through it!

Offenses & Defenses

Playstyle & Conclusion
Spoiler

So now that we have everything laid out for the build, how do we play it? Well it is quite straightforward and a lot of fun! Once we have all of our auras on, we simply roll keys 1-5 and shield charge into packs of monsters for fortify and cast Ethereal Knives. For the most part, you will be killing packs of monsters in 1 Spell Echo cast, freezing and shattering them. This also adds a lot of defense to our build since we are keeping monsters from attacking us by freezing them. Now you will want to be repeating this, rolling your flasks 1-5 and shield charging to packs to keep fortify, and as a Pathfinder, we will always have flask charges. Now, whenever your Vaal Haste comes up, simply activate it to get more speed!

For bosses and hexproof monsters, we will want to drop our Orb of Storms to ensure that we are getting and keeping our Power Charges up. This will also apply Warlord's Mark, for non-hexproof monsters, to give us some more Life and Mana sustain on longer fights.

Now all of the footage here is run on a 5L setup, and as you can see, it performs extremely well! Overall, this is an amazing build for quickly clearing maps and has a lot of headroom for improvement for players that wish to keep pushing for higher goals. We can gain more damage through Low Life with a Shavronne’s Wrappings, get a Headhunter which is amazing for clear speed and of course Skyforth boots for dealing with Stun and Power Charge Generation to free up our amulet slot and curse type!

In conclusion, I recommend this build for anyone that wants a fun, laid back map clearing character with a lot of survivability. If you have any questions feel free to message me or stop by my stream! ... Now...to start using these bad boys...

Nice build! Keep going!
Playing this build too (well EK Nova, not the ele version though). Super fun, highly recommended.

Personally I prefer to use the Blue Dream for power charge generation, and HOI/COH/Poacher's Mark for frenzy and more flask charges (which also lets me drop Veteran Bowyer or whatever since I get enough flask charges and take attack/move speed instead.) I also use Kiara's Determination for stun immunity so that I can use Bisco's collar for more drops, and res/ES rings instead of dedicating a slot to stun immunity.

I do play the Poison/Chaos variant though which has great single target even if my PC drop (I use Wither Totem instead of OOS/PCOC setup) so it may be different than ele builds but I'd figure I'd mention it as an option.

Yup, the build is quite fun once you get it fully geared up.

The Blue Dream makes a really nice option for getting Poachers Mark in for having Frenzy and Power Charges in the build. I was considering going full poison, but really wanted the nice Crit Freeze and Shatters with Hatred/HoI :P.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hey there, great build guide you made here. I'm currently leveling with it.

What do you think when i can switch out the lifesprigs, will they suffice til 70 ?

Also I'm personally not sure if I'll need the 8% ats from kraityn in cruel as we already got the 16% more attack speed on gloves. What do you think about other choices ? (skill point, cast speed)

Cheers!
Question about jewels. Do attack speed and or phys damage with one handed/dagger/etc help increase ek damage?
What are your thoughts on replacing the chest with a skin of the loyal and instead of 4B2G have a 3B2G1R with a level 3 empower instead of the crit damage? I'm not really sure if the skin of the loyal option would be alright defense wise and also not sure if an empower would be more damage than the crit multiplier gem.

Either use Empower, Controlled Destruction, or Item Quantity since Increased Critical Damage is not that great.

I used my Lifesprigs until I bought my endgame weapon, which was in the 60s. You can go for any skill point in cruel, I just wanted more clear speed.

Only Global Increases to Attack Speed will benefit your Shield Charge, not your EK. Damage with Daggers will not benefit your EK.

When I was doing calculations on PoE Builder, I did more average damage with a level 20 Increased Critical Damage, than a level 3 Empower. A level 4 Empower will do more damage, it was just that I was trying to keep the build cheap. A Skin on the Loyal would be a big damage boost, as you would get +1 to EK and +1 to Empower, but requires good ES gear to ensure you get a good ES pool.
