" Usually, going into town refills your stats and then you keep these full stats when you enter a combat area. Presumably, "Your energy shield starts at 0" means that you do not get this refill (in fact, entering town would probably deplete your ES to 0), and when you enter a combat area, your Energy Shield will be 0 (for example, 0/1311). @adghar - thanks. I totally missed the town use case.
