Let's talk about sanctuary cities
I mean cut to the chase. I'd like to hear some opinions. The city I live in has recently turned into one and this is surprising because the area is very Republican (all my state and federal reps and senators are GOP).
I know how I feel about it but I'd like other opinions. We've all heard the story of the woman who was murdered in San Fran but that is only one incident. Censored. Last bumped on Feb 4, 2017, 5:28:16 PM

They are now trying to pass a bill that will let a victim of a crime caused by a refugee/illegal, to sue the mayor of the Sanctuary city.
taking in unchecked people from different cultural backgrounds is very dangerous. it only takes one extremist to fuck up a whole city block. I need more purple titles

On the specific topic of immigration sanctuary cities, I'm opposed to them because I agree with most of the Trump platform regarding immigration.
However, in the more general concept of sanctuary cities — municipalities refusing to voluntarily cooperate with federal agencies in the enforcement of federal laws — I support that. I consider overreach of federal power over states and municipalities to be a higher principle than the immigration policy of the moment. Please note that refusal to voluntarily cooperate is not the same as immunity from subpoena, nor the same as the right to prevent federal officers to operate within one's area, nor the same as licence to conspire to cover up crime from federal discovery. Instead, I believe state and municipal law enforcement has prosecutorial discretion over their jurisdiction, and have the same rights as everyday citizens when it comes to cooperating with a federal investigation. If a city wants to issue an official policy that it's on the federal government to enforce federal laws, and that they have no interest in voluntary cooperation, I'm just fine with that. Good luck getting federal funding for your programs, though. Combining those two stances: I believe the actions of these "sanctuary cities" are foolish and self-destructive, but I respect their right to local collective self-determination, and would (and will) argue to protect it. I think it's deeply hypocritical how partisans of the previous opposition party *cough RayCheetah cough* tend to be all about state's rights and the ominous expansion of federal power, then as soon as their party establishes dominance they about-face and want an all-powerful federal system. Fun Fact: Obama put a Ban on Iraq in 2011 for about 6 months, in a very similar way that Trump is currently doing on 7 countries atm. And also Obama bombed many more countries than Bush.
Also, I think there is nothing wrong into expelling illegal immigrants. and sanctuary cities are just butthurt politicians who abuse their powers and should be procecuted. Last edited by diablofdb#3816 on Feb 1, 2017, 6:15:25 PM

I personally have no doubt that Trump will at the very least cut the funding for these cities. Where I live there is more than Trump to worry about; much more. The governor is if anything even tougher on this issue than Trump and it may end up in the state Supreme Court before anyone ends up before the US Court.
I'm not sure how the courts will rule. There are some that have strong states rights perspectives as opposed to federalist. Here is how I feel as a citizen: I feel that the services in this city suck enough without having any federal funding (or perhaps state) cuts. I definitely believe that since the citizens' of these cities rights, freedoms and services are at stake we should have been allowed to vote. I would have said no! Now why should I go to the expense of moving because of all this shit? I don't believe this is fair. It is not like a ban of smoking or something that can be adapted to. Our roads are so full of ruts NOW I have to get my alignment done all the time so it is already costing me money. How will they be after funding cuts? We have areas now that look like Sarajevo after the war. Censored.

"While the second paragraph of that sentence is true, it is not the duty of a mayor to perform the functions of neither the FBI nor INS. That law would be roughly the equivalent of saying children who are depicted in online child pornography should have a right to sue the ISP that the pornographers used to distribute it. Both the anti-sanctuary law and the anti-pornography law would achieve the effect of embedding federal agencies deeper into places they don't belong. "If the sanctuary policies violate the will of the local populace, then the politicians who enact them deserve to be voted out. I hope the citizens of immigration sanctuary cities will do so at their first opportunity. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero.
