Is the new Solo Self Found option setup to fail?

I hope they leave everything the same in SSFL. A lot of folks are about to have their feelings hurt.

I doubt it. Most of the people who'll play it are the ones that have always played that way to begin with.

Actually no: RNG will have a much higher influence than now, because you need the good stuff to drop for you. So while it may be technically fair (everyone has the same chance), somebody who finds a great drop early will be at a huge advantage.

Ok, yeah, it wont be absolutely fair, but it will be more fair. RNG is entirely in the confines of the base ARPG mechanics and you should expect that two runs wont produce the same results.

In SSF environment you have to find a great item that is usable by your char. In trading environment you just have to find a great item, which you then sell and buy a great item usable by your char. In SSF it will still be a lot harder to "cashout" on luck, unless you reroll.

I wish for it would be called ironman mode

Also I bet if this mode will be popular there will be changes to it.

Iron man mode is true character death with carried gear destruction upon death.

I'll cruise through ssf whenever it starts. I usually trade once around lvl 70 just for a solid weapon upgrade. Mostly because i'm too jewish to spend orbs to roll a proper upgrade.

If anything the ssf switch will force me to relearn the vendor recipes i have forgotten.

two words: chaos recipe.

You think I haven't been doing that? I can't keep up with the costs. Amulets don't grow on trees.

And if you think the amulet recipe isn't hell, you are wrong.

Yeah, picking up a >= ilvl60 white amulet and craft it with any low level essence is very difficult.

It's even easier than that. You can buy white lv60+ amulets from vendors :o

I am concerned that this implementation of a self found option is being setup to fail, and thereby the concept of "self found" will be relegated to the annals of "tried it, didn't work, won't try again" by GGG.

I have three major concerns:

1. It forces you to play solo. Why not implement a party-based self-found option? People who like self found play also like to play in parties, the two are not conceptually mutually exclusive.

2. There is no change in any drop rates - not even orbs of regret. As Chris points out, PoE is designed around being able to trade, so it is ostensibly not designed around self found play. Why not at least make orbs of regret much cheaper to buy from vendors so that, on the odd chance you do find a build enabling unique, the opportunity cost of respeccing is lower?

3. There is no ladder or way of comparing progress to others. Just because you like self found doesn't mean you don't like competition. Again, the two (competitive spirit and self found preference) are not mutually exclusive.

These points, which *could* have been addressed by GGG in an optional self found league/tag/ladder, have not been addressed. As a result, I believe this optional Solo Self Found tag will be a miserable failure, causing GGG to throw away the concept for at least another...4 years.

1. This is a good idea and multiple people have suggested it. Hope they do it

2. I am SSF mostly and definately never traded for regrets. It takes, I duno, 10-20 hours to get a new char back to maps, so if Ineed to switch builds dramatically, I just start again. I made a suggestion to improving drop rates for uniques, which I think can be implemented without affecting the economy, hope they look at it :p

3. Isn't there a ladder? I thought they made one. They clearly wanted to address the 'bragging rights' issue, so if a 'ladder' is what is needed, I don't see why they won't look into it.
yes, since shared challenges defeat the entire point. give ssf-earned mtx an * asterisk behind the name, and it's different (=bragging right) from regular-earned mtx but does not punish regular league players at all. it's that easy ggg

for me, nothing whatsoever is gonna change. but that's the same as with all of their "innovations". same game since open beta, same damn pointless grind
since I have no hope for significant game design improvements in this game I am officially done with Path of Exile. done for good

I cant wait for this league and I'm a trader as in start flipping currency soon as I have HO. playing market margins will always be better than actually working (farming) for a living. Just compare billionaire hedge fund managers to brick layers. Ima lay bricks this time tho.

Pizza blast totems need no gear and maraduer has lots of resists nearby if you're short so I'll play that.

One thing for true selffound play is almost but not completely integrated:

To be able to farm for key uniques via the cards. It's just the "I need facebreakers" for my build, just a unique you can trade for 1 chaos. It's not about the big power uniques, or a 5 or evel 6 link - it's the cheap unique that will never drop if you need it.

So you don't need a higher drop rate - you just can farm a certain common unique.
Save "I need X for my build" builds for after you find X on another character.
