Can somone tell me what killed me?
" I thought we already established that we were not talking about HC? AkuTenshiiZero said he considers even PoE's XP loss on SC too punishing and because of that the game should brief the player on boss mechanics. Most MMORPGs I know do have some kind of death penalty (durability loss on gear is common). They're universally less severe than losing 10% XP in PoE level 90+, but bitching about repair costs is a real thing in many raiding guilds. And it's not like you need to be level 90+ to explore mid-tier maps in PoE (like Crypt which was being talked about). |

Also let's not forget the fact that people expect linear progression. Imagine you going back to the beginning of say FF 7 at level 100 and dying to a slime. That's PoE. None of the leveling progression makes sense when you can kill Shaper but die in a T7 map.
THAT's at the root of issue. Players build up theirs levels and their gear hoping to push into high difficulties, but then GGG throws in these strange one shot mechanics, some a direct result intentional balance and others a result of simply inept balance and smile on the couch when you rip like "hey that's our game so fun right?" Does it make the game harder? In a way yes. But so would breaking your mouse or clipping off half the screen but that's not how you go about making games challenging and FUN. Almost every high profile death from streamers is exactly this kind of crap. They get one shotted with a fully fleshed out build and spend the next 20 mins scratching their head wondering what killed them. So again, nice game balancing lol And then every GGG white knight is in here like "omg git gud you died because you didn't have fortify up and that boss had charges and inherently does 200% life based damage and you were on consecrated ground that amplifies his attacks 10000x and a bird flew by come on idiot it's so clear all those things lined up." Deliver pain exquisite

It's also not true that ranged has less problems than melee. If you have a tank build, you can basically faceroll Izaro. As ranged and evasion based build, I even got one-shot in cruel because there are a lot more mechanics if you are not in melee range. Also evasion is shit for boss fights because you have lower life and no armor for reduction -- so your best bet is to one-shot the boss before he one-shots you.
Apart from this, I like the idea of an agile, evasion based character. However, esp in the case of Izaro, YOU CAN NOT F*CKING TRAIN the fight bec it is hidden inside some freakingly long trial. This leads players to cheese the system by delaying the Izaro fight until he can either be one-shotted, or the player is basically an agile tank at Izaro's level. This fact alone, that you can kill Izaro without getting down-leveled to his level, is just ridiculous and makes this whole trial simply B.S. To put it into other words: those players who actually want to evolve and shine and be good at boss fights are dumped in favor of the mega grinders buying OP gear and carry runs for 10k exalts. But, well, it's GGG, so who am I talking to :) Another point is: why cant we see what killed us? That's just plain B.S. I can understand to some extent that GGG does not want dps stats. That's okay. But, please, at least give us the damage *received* in the last few seconds before a player death. In case of Izaro I simply died and there was no indication whatsoever what caused it. Tbh this boss is pretty easy WHEN you know the mechanic. I played Disfavour Cyclone before my current char, I just run straight to boss (so it eats my blashphemy), I immediately leap slam away from him (just in time to avoid nova), and he is dead in like few seconds after that.
Main problem is that for some reason mechanics like this are NOT SHOWN in tooltip, and it is beyound my mind how someone from GGG think that is cool and the way it should be done. I remember from some of the latest interviews how some dev mentioned they have right to introduce mechanic in boss fights that players don't necessery have to know about... Well, if this is one of them - I strongly vote against that attitude. For the end - Doedre also eats curse and becomes stronger - I think she gets Unholy Might buff from it (gain 30% of phys damage as chaos). Alt Art items as League MTX - When?

" A hint would be fine, right, 'discharges curses' should be enough to tell you something is fishy and put you on your guard. Sure, some would say 'how could you know that' and the answer is the same way we know some generic rare has 'powerful crits'. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

just an FYI there has been at least one MMO with permadeath (I will remember the name of it sooner or later) I think it was Wizardry online but not sure. and Anarchy Online used to have you lose all unsaved exp on death then it went to all unsaved exp went to a pool that you regained slowly. not sure about now as I dont play it anymore for other reasons.
with the xp loss you cant really fail forwards in POE. and while surprise mechanics can be devestating to the hardcore player most people learn in softcore first where death is only an exp loss. those that do try to learn in Hardcore inevitably die to something unforseen, they learn and dont die to that again. just my opinion |
