Can somone tell me what killed me?

My point was players have always been up against unknown mechanics. The first players to try something learn how things work the hard way and teach others. The Dominus bleed rain used to be much deadlier and I don't know what a mirror animation is. I know what the mirror atziri looks like and I still can't tell she's holding a mirror. And how did they find out she reflects curses? Assuming all map bosses are "run of the mill" is foolish. There are several that had mechanics the players had to figure out.

Sure, it sucks to die while trailblazing. But now that people have done it, others will learn from it. I just don't understand why anybody is surprised that new boss fights have new mechanics that players have to figure out by trial and error when the game has had such encounters for as ling as I've been playing.

This, especially with all of the new maps and bosses we have with 2.4, is one of my favorite things!
U MAD?
Trial and error wouldn't be a problem if the cost of error wasn't so high. It's also a matter of consistency, or lack thereof. This game is 99% cruise control, 1% instant death from out of nowhere. The idea of making the player "wake up" wouldn't even be a factor if the game wasn't putting you to sleep with mindless map clearing to begin with.

You can't be Dynasty Warriors and be Dark Souls at the same time.

THIS! A million times this. This is exactly this game. Like I don't even have too many moments where I get low and just barely make it out alive. It's always 100% life/ES down to dead. Always. Like in a blink of an eye, you dead son. GG. Please buy our supporter packs and new items in the shop thank you for your support, we have a sale on stash tabs btw.

That's what softcore is for. 10% XP loss is manageable, especially if you time the more risky attempts shortly after leveling up. Learn the things there and only do them in hardcore when you know them.

Well you can't play hardcore and expect to survive everything on your first try without reading guides either.

I never said anything about HC, though I empathize with anyone who gets cheapshotted in HC. 3rd-party resources should absolutely not be a necessity to play a game, though considering GGG's use of poe.trade as a crutch their stance is pretty clear. If the game itself cannot communicate vital information to the player, then it has completely failed.

And I consider 10% of my EXP a pretty fucking large loss. That directly translates to a loss of time, and time is a valuable thing. There is nothing more infuriating than losing everything you've accomplished in the past hour because the game sucker-punched you.

So tell me, how many MMORPGs have you played (or even heard of) that provide all necessary information about bosses and their abilities in-game? In every single MMORPG I've encountered it's up to the players to figure out how to deal with boss mechanics. Usually the top raiding guilds will learn the fights within a few days of a new expansion being released and post guides and videos for other players to follow. Not once I've seen such a guide published by the game developer. Does this mean all MMORPG raids have completely failed?

If there was no penalty for dying, it would be too easy to just zerg rush bosses. Especially considering that the boss fight does not even reset (aside from ES if the boss has one), so you can just go in, get a few hits in, die, repeat. At least in maps there's a limited number of portals.

I've died 50-odd times on essence so far, yet have made it to level 91, which was the goal for my build. A few of the deaths were really stupid mistakes from my own part, but they've made me learn to play better. I've rarely died to the same mistake twice.
