Yes, these people were extremely unpleasant and not particularly bright... They should still have the right to express their bigoted and stupid opinions.
The problem with restricting free speech is that everyone thinks everyone else who doesn't share their opinions is an idiot. If we started just blocking entire groups of people's right of expression on general principle - they are idiots, they are bigots, they are not right, etc. - it's a slippery, slippery slope. Just an example - I think religion is a big pile of dogshit. I could quote you passage after passage of idiotic, contradictory statements. Should it be forbidden? What about voting rights? Why should someone with no education and the IQ of room temperature in summer have the right to decide the future of my country? Why are idiots even allowed to speak about anything? What about modern blockbuster movies, songs and books? Complete, utter idiocy. It's difficult to even find something not monumentally stupid. Most people are shockingly stupid. To quote someone else once again, just think how stupid the average person is and now remember that half of all people are even more stupid. Who's an idiot? Well, everyone who disagrees with me or has a lower result at some arbitrary test, of course. See where I'm going? p.s. about the quotation, a short internet check showed it's often mistakenly attributed to Voltaire. Robespierre wasn't really a freedom of speech guy, he was more of a 'I'll chop your head off' kind of guy. You have to be realistic about these things. About freedom of speech: you're right, everybody should have it - along with freedom to gather etc. - regarless of what they say, otherwise it is not real freedom. I wouldn't want it otherwise, and me saying "We don't need a Heterosexual Parade Day" was more along the lines that these things usually ends up being against LGBT than me hoping that they'll be actively stopped from having one. EDIT: it's just that I'd really love people to stop and think before speaking sometimes... And I agree with you on religion. " I've red once that hate speech is good to start debate and talk about controvertials topic. Talking about homosexuality about 60 years ago was considered hate speech. So I think there are some conversations that is worth having even if it's considered hate speech. We should never prevent ourselves to speak out our mind or voicing our opinions. |

In the U.S. "freedom of speech" means you´re basically allowed to say anything. I think, there are always some people listening to firestarters who will ignite something, that´s the problem with it. |
