So, I've tried to play this game off and on for a few years now. Most ARPGs I have thousands of hours in (some at 4k+ hrs), this one ... I always seem to have issues getting motivated to play for any amount of time. (only at like 200hrs, with over 100 of those played just recently).
Haven't really played in almost 2 years I think, but I have a few friends who got me playing again recently and I figured I should give some feedback on my personal experience playing POE and why I struggle to enjoy this title. This is however, the first time I've written any feedback for the devs directly. (as I am sure people can tell by my post count lol)
I'll leave it in point from to keep it as brief as possible (still a bit of a read, sorry):
Why I struggle to enjoy POE:
- not being able use an entire stack of weapon/armor stones at once, shouldn't need to have to click 40 times to 20% a piece of gear. Allow me to drop an entire stack of 20 stones on the item and just be done with it.
- poor map design / map overlay. Some maps I can't see the overlay at all, other times the map is so convoluted with squiggles and lines all over, it's difficult to even figure out wth I'm looking at.
- way too much map clutter (tired of stubbing my toe on every useless piece of furniture / debris that seems to clutter almost every map in the game). There is something to be said about immersion and ambiance, but not at the expense of filling most of the maps in the game with useless objects that serve no purpose.
- seemingly zero optimization on particle effects (some builds can't even be used in parties they lag people so much). Holy *bleep* does this game lag!. This is probably my #3 issue with this game, besides the crappy loot system that is.
- too much card clutter, nice idea, but they should have their own giant stash space for them alone. Make it into a quest to acquire it maybe.
- I feel crafting is just terrible and poorly designed for the most part. So many useless recipes. Can't say I've counted exactly how many there are, but it's gotta around 50 or so I'm guessing and it feels like the vast majority of them are totally useless and needlessly complex. Like take the +2 chaos / regal recipes for example. Shouldn't need to save 8 items of exceptional level in order to get a measly couple of trash currency. Heart is in the right place I suppose, but imo the entire system should be overhauled.
- high level currency drops are way too rare. Think most people play ARPGs for the loot, boring getting trash all day every day, especially considering 90% of all the uniques in the game are seemingly useless. Which leaves us farming rares mostly and the vast majority of those are useless too, which leads me to my next point...
- Why do we still need to waste time with portal & iD scrolls? Last time I checked the calendar this wasn't 1999. Items should just be ID'd and the portal should just be a UI button you can use whenever you want. Pointless making me waste inventory space on that junk imo.
- Unhappy with the party system. Not sure if it's the size of the mobs, the zoom level, the variable movement speeds of all the different builds players use, or something else I can't think of atm, but partying in this game is extremely unsatisfying for me most of the time.
- I feel like solo play is punished, esp on maps 9-15. Shouldn't be forced to party in order to get better drops / xp. ARPGs I feel are definitely one of the very few game types I feel I should be able to enjoy by myself and in POE I get penalized for doing so, at least it feels that way.
- Notice boards feels more like my junk mail folder and less like an actual tool for finding parties with all the useless trade ads on them. Should have a separate tab for that mess, or better yet, just give us a auction house! If trading is available (and it is obviously), people are only deluding themselves that any other system is better than an auction house. Simple as that imo.
- Crafting 6 socket / links is way too hard most of the time. When I hear about people blowing like 12,000+ fusings trying to link items, I can only shake my head. This should be an enjoyable pastime, not a second job. There is a reason why insanely popular korean grinders don't get ported (or are radically changed) for western audiences. The majority of us don't have the time or the inclination to waste on farming all that needlessly just to get nothing in return.
- Please give us an auction house already. Why force us to use 3rd party tools like poe.xyz / price.info. I don't feel we should need the player's to build tools to sustain the economy. I shouldn't need to sit in a trade chat yelling like I did 20+ years ago in order to sell stuff. Giant waste of time. I also shouldn't need to waste my time watching a show, or doing some other activity in order to market my drops to the player base. I should be able to focus on actually playing the game and enjoying myself not sitting around spamming channels / waiting for someone to see my forum / trade post and msg me.
- Why can mobs hit me from off the screen before I can even see them? (more than a few bosses are able to one shot me like this, usually on high lv maps in parties though). Either allow me to zoom out more so I can see them when I am inside their attack range, or change their effective attack range. This is an incredibly frustrating "feature" of this game and imo it shouldn't even be an issue. I feel like this is a major oversight in basic game design and something that shouldn't even need to be stated.
- Learning what is good & bad. What should be saved, what should be crafted, etc, etc is probably the biggest obstacle in being able to enjoy this game as a fresh player imo. Even more so than any of the other issues I've listed here already. I understand a certain amount of understanding comes with experience and time, but honestly I feel the dev's could do a much better job in giving players the tools to more easily identify what is good and what is useless in regards to items.
- Master leveling from 1-6 even 1-7 isn't too bad, but holy hell, what is up with the exp needed to go from 7-8? Needlessly long for no reason imo. It's nice to have long term goals in the game, but if you are trying to get people into your (currently) convoluted crafting system, why add needless time sinks in the process? The game isn't subscription based, there is no need for a time sink here imo.
I am sure I can sit here and think of another couple of dozen bullet points if I wished to invest more time in writing this, but I think that is most of the major stuff, so I'll leave off there for now. It's already rather lengthy and I know how people seem to dislike reading anything longer than 140 characters nowadays.
In summation, I think overall a lot of the current systems can be trimmed down to be much leaner and more efficient (and thus more enjoyable), and if you guys can ever get the loot system sorted & optimize this game so it doesn't run like a turd on crutches (esp in parties, with a variety of builds), it could go places.
Cheers.
P.s. if you disagree with anything I've said and feel the need to yell at me about it, just know I simply don't care. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and these are simply my personal feelings and observations when playing this game.
Everyone has an equal right to relay feedback on their experiences in the game for the devs to consider. These are simply mine. So before you waste your time trying to formulate a scathing retort that offers nothing to this topic other than you whining about something you didn't like, know that you are only wasting your own time.
That being said, if you wish to contribute things you dislike about the game, or quality of life improvements you'd like to see implemented, or simply your own experiences as a new player, by all means, reply away with my blessing. Don't feel like you're hijacking my thread. I don't mind.

I agree with basicly everything.
Since you seem to be playing a lot of games, can you show me one that is fun and doesn't look like a full time job like PoE?
After 900 hours, this game just looks like an endless frustration loop. Looking for another one, but it's not an easy task.
If you check the forum, everything you said, players said before and nothing was done about it. Seems that they just wanna keep the game the way it is. Sadly I just checked out the forum after 3 months or so playing.
:/

Ya I don't expect these guys to get off their ass and do anything about it, but there is zero incentive for me to spend a single cent on this game until they make some changes. Been like 3 years already, not like it's difficult to resist spending money on a game that the dev refuse to improve.
As for other games, Marvel Heroes (on steam or stand alone client) isn't too shabby, probably my top suggestion. Some other games I'll mention:
- Warhammer: Vermintide (steam game, like a mix of a ARPG & a co-op game like Left 4 Dead, big update coming soon (tm) with a new game mode
- Grim Dawn - (another ARPG game. This is already 100% content complete and launches out of early access on steam end of this month I believe)
- Warframe (I suggest this hesitantly, while the game is ok, there is a lot of work to do in it)
- Tree of Savior (spiritual successor to ragnarok) launches soon, looks alright. Depends on how brutal the cash shop is
- Black Desert Online (same as above, launches soon / depends on cash shop not sucking)
- Paragon - new game coming soon from Epic (makers of UT99 / 2k4, etc). Like Smite, but better and without the crappy company running it (ie: hi-rez).
- Lost Ark (MMO) looks pretty nice, though I admit I haven't read much about it. On my radar though
- The Secret World - can't say enough good things about this game really. How F2P games should be run imo.
- Shadowrun Chronicles : Infected (directors cut) - can find it on steam. Fun if your craving some nostalgia. Despite the meager graphics, it's enjoyable. Getting a new mission expansion soon
Hope that helps.
Cheers.

While I think most (not all) of those points are pretty minor, I do understand that many small issues can add up to major problems, and that evaluation of severity varies between people.
Regarding these:

Starting with Portal and ID, I never even thought about this. Coming from D1 and D2 this is so normal I never thought to question it. But really, the scrolls drop like candy so it's not like there's any tension of scarcity. It is somewhat relevant in a race environment, but get rid of them for everyone and it is still as level a playing field as it is now. Imagine all the time we could save by not picking these up, and not having to do the pickup-id-trash routine when checking items.
Back to the high-level currency point, I fully agree. I think I've seen an exalt drop in the last 3-4 years, but I wouldn't swear to it. That's a problem. Even the middle-tier currencies don't drop in nearly the quantities required for basic needs like linking or mastercrafting.
I wonder how currency would feel if scrolls were removed. Make transmutes the lowest currency that drops at the rate of ID scrolls, and move up the line. High-tier currency would still be rare as shit, but at least a bit less rare. Baby steps.

if it's stash space you want, just buy a bundle. it's cheap, about the cost of a meal.

ever tried it? i have. i tipped my toes into the water and watched a couple/few/several hundred fusing orbs go poof and lost my nerve. now if the base you're trying to 6L is something you can reasonably replace, just save all the 5Ls, sell 'em for more fusings, and repeat with the replacement base item. I hear that's a reasonable approach.

It's always good to hear feedback from newer players.
Also, he seemed pretty tame and genuine in his responses, so maybe lay off the snark if you disagree with him?
AAANDDDD, I want to say to not personally attack the Devs. They've done an amazing job and respond to the community more than I've seen any other company, by an enormous margin, and they release content constantly.
That said, I agree with a lot of the things OP mentioned. Most notably the lag/party play problems. I like soloing or playing duo, but it's simply not viable to do so towards later maps. Also, the lag gets ridiculous. I wish there was a way to turn down the particle effects *a lot*.
I disagree with the rarity of some currency and game recipe's. Maybe certain drops could be increased a little but, but if you know about the recipe's, it's not too hard.
Also, removing id and portal scrolls might be a good idea, though I haven't really thought about it al the way through.

This should be sticked on top of the forums as a new player guide , like seriously lol so much truth about the current state of the game .
Sad thing is this isn't even a complete list , just a fraction .

So, I've tried to play this game off and on for a few years now. Most ARPGs I have thousands of hours in (some at 4k+ hrs)
- not being able use an entire stack of weapon/armor stones at once, shouldn't need to have to click 40 times to 20% a piece of gear. Allow me to drop an entire stack of 20 stones on the item and just be done with it.
4k+ hours in other ARPGs and you can't even figure out that you can keep shift pressed and click only the left button?
Let me guess: to buy ammy and rings from Gheed in D2 you moved all of them manually to your inventory? -.-
ID&Portal scrolls are currency anyway. You can sell them to dedicated MFers usually 120:1 chaos. It's a nice source of extra incomes, and i like it this way
Also, name me ANY ARPG game where solo play isn't punished

Some of it is a bit negative maybe but overall worth reading.
