What's up with the rarity of alchemy/exalted orbs?

i have rolled a ilvl 60 stonebreaker 119 times w/o a cruel mod... i guess i will keep on truckin...

There's rare and then there's rare

in nearly 200 levels of total character levels i have received ONE regal orb and have never seen an exalted orb drop, my main toon is level 50 HC , one would think that i would have found a couple of each by now..but alas

And why would you think that? Would you expect to find a JAH/BER/ZOD rune in D2 within a few weeks of play?

if the point of the game is grinding mobs in hopes of finding decent good gear/regal/exalted orbs just at lvl 60+
then it`s not only boring as hell and i loose the interest of playing but also it takes more than a few months(time that i don`t think alot of people with jobs afford) to get the stuff.

The one major downside to the game mechanics is the fact that its based on a lottery type luck 1:10000000, pretty crappy chances if u ask me.

All bad games try to make the game harder just becuz they dont have any quality content.

stick with the lottery chances but give people more quests that reward more quality orbs, even if i hoard 15 alchemy orbs along the 20 levels interval i doubt that ill get any epic gear from using them that ill get any decent stuff; to make the game more interesting make the orbs self destruct after certain levels if they are not used. Whats the point of hoarding resources if i cant use them cuz i wont get any more soon.

i need epic luck to get orbs when i need them -> i need epic luck to get good gear

thats like making 2 times the lottery type luck. Its not enough that i got the damn thing but i need to roll again to get a lousy rare

You're validating my point if exalted/regals are rare as jah/ber/zod. Exalted and regals aren't guaranteed to improve any item and you have no idea what you are getting. That is not true for those runes. You know exactly what you are getting. Thus this goes back to the cost-benefit where the costs of using those orbs are exceedingly high, too much for its benefit.

u cant get a 150% ed weapon from alteration because u need 2 prefixes for a weapon with more than 129% ed. and blues always spawn with 1 pre and 1 suffix.

reagal and exalted are used on perfect/close 2 perfect blues with key mods to make them even better. or on great rares with open slots. the best items we'll see in this game are very likely to be crafted from scratch. u have much better controll over certain mods and chances are much higher to hit the right mods if u allready have 2 desired from alteration. 20-25 is nothing by the way...

I hate to barge in here with a noob question, but how do you tell if a white or blue item is near "pefeect"? What scale or range is available for any base white item? How can I tell a white is "perfect" and good to use for crating (besaides the gem slot layout).

check prefixes and suffixes, magic items can have max 2 mods, rares up to 5 (or 6, im not sure now havent played PoE for long)

a white item is good for crafting if its found in the endgame zone with high itemlevel. u can check itemlevel by picking the item up and type /itemlevel in chat. (high mods need high itemlevel to spawn) also u want perfect inherent mod for a white like 20 all atributes on an onyx amulett.

for blue ones u can check the item data section on this webpage.
u want close to perfect rolls (as high as possible) for the KEY mods u need for your class befor u using an regal or even more..
