Softcore is not softcore
I know that Path of Exile is suppose to be a hard and "unforgiving" game but losing experience when you die doesn't fit in softcore.
1.) I play softcore because I can't handle the stress of never dying. I just want to log on and whether I play for 20 minutes or several hours have fun and feel like I'm progressing with my character. But with the experience loss on death I can never relax. I know we all play games for different reasons, some play to challenge themself and some play just to relax and have a great time not feeling any stress. I thought that's why there is a Softcore and a Hardcore league. To have something for both of those groups, but now whith this severe death penalty the casuals have no where to enjoy themself. 2.) It removes build deversity. Glasscannon builds are not as viable and you allways need to play defensive and not take any risks. I understand that there must be some penalty on death but losing 15% of the progression to the next level is way to much. Don't tell me to go play LoL or something, I really enjoy this game but getting the feeling of wasting my time every time I die is really harsh. Right now it's more like Less-Hardcore and Hardcore league. |

There is no softcore league. There's hardcore, and there's default. The term softcore is just to help the hardcore players feel like they have larger e-peens.

Typical response is "this is not game for you, this game is for hardcore crowd"
I understand what you want to say..but IMHO removing death penalties is really not a solution...D2 had death penalties..and more several.. but people could play it in relaxed way..why? Because game were just better balanced. You pointed on two problems which are indirectly causing frustration to many players..that Glass-cannon builds are not viable in the later stages and build diversity is pretty low because everyone has to play defensively ... it leads to frustrations with a game, because people really can't enjoy game with many of their characters..but again..blaming death penalty is really not way to go.. GGG has to fix overall balance of the game.. I know..there will be guys telling us "I am lvl 70, HC and I have no problem with content...learn to play" or something like that..but we should ignore this people and focus on real problems. |

Default is softcore. Death is almost meaningless, at least until level 85~. You're not punished for building stupidly (people in SC can play the game with 0 life or ES nodes). Toxic play results. The economy is also hyper-inflated and will only get worse with time. HC removes items from the economy rapidly, making everything meaningful and valuable.

The "never being able to relax even on softcore" feeling is a big part of what makes the game so fun for me. I play for fun and the challenge and if I was relaxed\unafraid of dying just sitting there spamming abilities I don't think the game would be nearly as enjoyable.
I like actually feeling like you lose something when you screw up and die(dying to lag\desync is extremely frustrating, but the server issues are MUCH better than they were in the start)and I definitely feel like it adds more depth to the game. |

I play a solo and I'm a melee + trap build, so I'm basically a ticking time-bomb on HC. That being said, risk isn't for everyone so I understand your beef with not only the players here (the arrogance is pretty much rampant on the forums), but also the penalties.
I would have no qualms with a league under Default. Call it "Fun League" or whatever. |

" This isn't remotely true. Currency is never removed from HC in any large amounts due to stash. Just think, when is the last time you carried all your exalts with you when you went farming? Answer? Never. The only thing removed in HC is gear, but there is always more gear. All that does is make valuable gear slightly more valuable, also due to the fact there are fewer high level'd players, so endgame gear will be more valuable as well. There isn't actually that large of a difference in the economies, as is evident by the trading threads where common items are sold for relatively the same costs between the leagues. The only thing that makes Default any less stable of an economy is that, theoretically, a determined (and super rich) HC player could cause hyper-inflation by intentionally killing himself and brining massive amounts of currency with him. Like, say, 20 mirrors, leaving the default league a bit screwed until it all stabilizes out. Last edited by NastyPants#4999 on Feb 16, 2013, 2:18:06 PM

You can't lose a level, that's as soft as I'm willing to accept it. If you're having trouble with a particular boss then make sure you have a fresh level before attempting them and then the deaths cost you nothing.

I really hate myself for saying this, because I don't want to have anything to do with the "this game is not for you" crowd (mostly because that's a moronic statement), but... I don't think Merciless PoE is meant for relaxing. The other difficulties, maybe, but not Merciless.
You can still keep playing, run lower level areas. You can't lose a level, like defktiv said, so it's not like it's grinding you down to nothing. Otherwise the only thing I can suggest is to roll an alt. |

If you want to play absolute glass cannon, get as much movespeed as possible.

If you put on your full plate mail, and I throw hundreds of toothpicks at you, you'll basically not feel it. If someone catapults a whole tree at you, don't expect the Armour to prevent as much of the damage. |
