Highlights

• Data from League of Legends reveals links between real-world and online personality.
• Players with antisocial usernames behaved in an antisocial manner within the game.
• Ages estimated from usernames correlate strongly with ages entered at registration.
• Online interactions valence correlates positively age. Older players behave better.
• Gaming usernames provide a useful source of psychological information.

Abstract
Multi-player online battle arena games (MOBAs) are large virtual environments requiring complex problem-solving and social interaction. We asked whether these games generate psychologically interesting data about the players themselves. Specifically, we asked whether user names, which are chosen by players outside of the game itself, predicted in-game behaviour. To examine this, we analysed a large anonymized dataset from a popular MOBA (‘League of Legends’) – by some measures the most popular game in the world.

We find that user names contain two pieces of information that correlate with in-game social behaviour. Both player age (estimated from numerical sequences within name) and the presence of highly anti-social words are correlated with the valences of player/player interactions within the game.

Our findings suggest that players' real-world characteristics influence behaviour and interpersonal interactions within online games. Anonymized statistics derived from such games may therefore be a valuable tool for studying psychological traits across global populations.

Never would have guessed... :-)

The real interesting trait about a name comes from turning the table upside down.

Would you be the person you are today if you had a different name for example.

A name is like a prayer or a mantra, it is repeated ad infinitum within a life-time as a vocal point for attention.

My name for example is translated as "protector of the world", my real name not "Boem". Which isn't my preferred avatar either, my usual avatar is "Itheryel".

Peace,

-Boem/Itheryel-

edit : just to say, i attribute a lot to a persons name and i derive a lot of information from it.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes

I am a man of my word. Helpful, fair. Incorruptible. So my accountname fits.

Literal translation from Dutch to English:
Rein = Pure (Rein in German as well)
Hart = Heart (Herz in German)

It is also a German/Dutch (sur)name but that is not the reason why I took it.

So this article got published. That actually surprises me a bit. Going to read through it when I have some spare time.

My user name "Eldyrus" dates back to 10-15 years ago during Everquest 1. I remember I had alot of trouble picking out a name because all the good names were taken so eventually I just made this one up. I have been using it as my gaming name ever since.
I'm not sure.

I played a dwarf fighter in my first ever game of D&D back in the 1960s... before D&D was a thing. We used ChainMail miniature rules for combat. Didn't even call it D&D yet.

His name was Shagsbeard after a bastardization of Shakespeare.

Might have been the early 70s. Dunno.

uhm..
Bars means snow leopard. It does reflect my personality.

About this study: that's fucking groundbreaking. What are they going to discover next, jumping in a pool is likely to make you wet?
You have to be realistic about these things.

hat's off and huge respect, from an 80s->present-day D&D fan.

My name is Pacman backwards. I've had this since the closed beta of Everquest/Anarchy Online (can't remember where I used it first). It's short and easy to pronounce in several languages (English not being my mother tongue). I also used Wakawaka (the sound Pacman makes) when Namcap was taken in some games. I'm not sure you can really figure out anything about me purely from the name.
