Srs question, when did people start calling a single, individual monster a "mob"?

The term "mob" is short for "mobile, which was used by Richard Bartle for objects that were self-mobile in MUD1. The term as it exists in MMORPGs is derived from the MUD usage. (Source code in DikuMUD uses the term "mob" to refer to a generic NPC; DikuMUD was a heavy influence on EverQuest.) The term is properly an abbreviation rather than an acronym, but backronyms for "MOB" such as "monster or beast," "mere ordinary beast" and "mean old bastard" have also been coined.

2005? Try 1978 - 1984.

I can vouch for "mob" being used quite a bit during Everquest. Holding aggro on a mob so the caster could take it out with a big spell was a fun tactic.

I first heard it from Raph Koster on the old usenet list for Ultima Online. Koster was the lead dev for UO and posted as "Designer Dragon."

Pretty sure that the term originated in MUDs, where certain monsters were stationary/tied to locations and others were mobile. Mob = short for "Mobile."

First place where I saw the player based make use of the term commonly was in Everquest, which was basically just a graphical DikuMud.

When did people start abbreviating 'serious' as srs, and did this start with POE?

It's goddamned fascinating. I'm not one of those people that gets bent out of shape when somebody misuses their/they're/there and other such things, in fact I could care less (...lul) but I actually am really curious how this started. "Serious" seems to be a word that could easily be in the "Top 10 words people on facebook are too stupid to spell" list.

Massive thanks to GGG for producing such a fun and engaging game, it has taken up faaaaaaar too much of my life over the last 5 years.

Best of luck in the future!
Srs didn't start with POE if I had to guess it goes back at least as far as Anarchy Online but farther back than that I can't remember

The term is noob. Nub is some stupid shorthand.

Yeah, it should be nub: an overgrown noob.

A nub is a noob who has leveled up, thinks they have mastered the game, but actually don't know what they are doing.

I think it is one of the more obscure terms, but I used to hear it once in a while.

So much of this. It drives me nuts when people in MMOs (say, WoW) whine that they got 'ganked' when all it was was one player getting the drop on them.
I just realized that alot of us in this thread sound like crotchety old people bitching about "kids these days" :) hell I am only 43 though I guess since I used to play in mud's that makes me ancient these days

(what also dates me is that I realize the arpg come from roguelikes) :D

I'm almost 30, but I started on MUDs (and worked on/made a few), they were my first 'play online with others' games. So I'm not a crotchety old person but I still bitch about "kids these days", lol

Yea people always complains about me ganking them with my rogues stunlocked them till they die (tho it's 1v1, rogues always prefer to do it from behind 1 on 1), usually while a mob is hitting on them as well. To pour salt over the insult I try to let the mob get the kill shot whenever I can as well, so they will need to pay the repair bill. Happy fun time.
The real hardcore PoE players and the elites sit in town and zoning in and out of their hideouts trading items. Noobs that don't know how to play PoE correctly, kill monsters for items. It's pure fact, it will never change.

Welcome to PoE.
