With the low damage effectiveness and crit chance, the best way to scale FS is cast speed. Unfortunately that can cause you to be pretty lonely :-C

I made a chart that shows the amount of time it takes to get to max dps with my current cast time and duration.

Like Flame Blast it requires standing still for an amount of time. Unlike Flame Blast it does not work well with burn and has poor single target damage Edit: unless you link Conc Effect.

It does however leech pretty well with the way leech works. It has a large aoe that instead of hitting a pack all at once hits many times over time, while not canceling each other out with the single leech queue.

Does anyone have a suggestion on what gems to put in to maximize damage on groups of enemies, if it is so simple to describe? I'm still rather inexperienced with proper builds, despite how long i've been around lol.
Firestorm's quality should be changed to + projectile speed and make the fireball delay scale with projectile speed.

Powerful skill in my opinion, I've been using it in the 5 day solo league and it has no trouble killing anything even unlinked. It's especially useful for killing remote things (like totems) without having to kill everything in the line of sight first. You could use flameblast for this, but I actually prefer firestorm, because it has no delay and you don't need to stand still to channel it.

I have one question though if anyone knows: with an increased area of effect gem, do all the individual explosions of the fireballs have a larger area? If so, that would mean more overlap and thus more single target damage.

Oh, so if I understand this correctly, this is only good for area damage, and makes no difference or is even bad for single target damgage?
Correct.
23% Firestorm + level X enhance:

Level 2: .07 (same as 20% FS)
Level 3: .06 (same as 20% FS)
Level 4: .05 (20% FS = .06)
Level 5: .05 (same as 20% FS)

My issue with firestorm is one of survivability but after reading this thread it appears that I have built it wrong. In 2.0, I think the focus of this skill will be to increase AOE, cast speed, and duration. The 5th link should be enhance but in the meantime I'd select maybe fire penetration.

Someone mentioned earlier using flame totem which makes sense but I can see it dying quickly. Would molten shell even help survivability? I do not know how to remain alive using this skill...
