If you are not a Summoner spec then you might want to try supporting your Golem with Minion Support gems such as Minion Life! I finally just give up messing with running a Golem once i get in maps!
They die so much they are not up for half your fights anyway!

if you *are* a summoner spec... you probably should not be using them anyway.
I'm not sure, but it feels like they nerf the life on it compared to closed beta. When I was playing my bow character the ice golem almost never died, especially level 16 gem and higher, however it seems like they die way too fast.

Yes you can link it with fortify or minon life\res\speed, but I'd like my links to remain useful for other things and just rather use the golem for the "buff" it provides.

its one of those situations where the golem doesn't work for anyone well.

summoners dont need or want them because technically there is not a golem alive that really provides a useful bonus to summoners.

ice golem does nothing
flame golem does nothing
and chaos golem does offer that damage resistance but 3% is not much at all and since most summoner dont have any other defense or at-least dont have alot of defense stacked , its impact is minimal.

the golem for summoners is a animate guardian with cheap utility items

but other classes cant make good use of the golem because without the support that comes standard for summoners .. the extra life (100 - 150% increased minion life) the extra resists 16% + more often than not an additional 35- 40 from the purity of elements that many summoners use

means you have a minion that is about 4 times less durable. and we all know anything without capped resistances in and game will simply melt.
Flame golem gives me several hundred more DPS. All with a single button press that takes 0.1 seconds. And it takes away aggro.

In what way does it SUCK?

I don't always have the skill slots open to recast it, maybe if we had the additional skill slots\2ndary bar it wouldn't be so bad.

Because when i trying to keep my Golem, My Tempest Shield, My Molten Shell, and 7 End Charges, and my Fortify all up though out maps it can get to be a little too much! Something has to go.... Which ends up being the one out of all those that i have to mess with the most... Which is typically the Golem!
