Eternal aren't the problem, Mirrors are!

Short post: I blame mirrors, at least partially, for both the imbecilic "trash" mentality, and for the gaps between what qualities of items are sellable. Mirrors, and also the half realized affix system which allows players to so easily agree upon which specific affix are best.

2. Regardless of the answer to #1, the plan might fall apart due to ninjas. Deducted crafters currently have incentive to be ethical, because they want repeated Mirror fees from willing customers... they depend on reputation. However, if you decentralize things, and have each item mirror only once, you cannot count on that. What will stop a player from just running off with the other player's currency? There is no repeated business to consider or reputation to protect. The mirror is a social currency, and requires the proper social context to function.

If we can't trust players to be ethical - and I doubt we could - then this particular nerf would be even worse than no Mirrors at all, because play experiences would be utterly ruined by pervasive scamming.

how about the one doing the mirroring gives the market value of the mirror to the customer as insurance he won't just run with it and the gets it back plus the fee after the mirroring is actually done?
true, that would require an amount of wealth from the seller and could also be exploited by a troll offering to buy the awesome bow with stupid coloring and then run with the insurance currency leaving the useless copy to the seller.
one could also get help from a well known and respected member of the community if needed.
anyway i'm for total removal so this line of thinking is pointless.

in a world with eternals and no mirrors perfect items wouldn't exist anyway because nobody would be willing to spend that much without a way to get the currency back so even the god level crafters would be content with getting good mods even if not at the maximum possible value.

in a situation where perfect items already exist and are unlikely to be beaten even with new t1 rolls the usage of mirrors won't change, nobody with a brain will use them in a temp league, they will still be rolled over to standard and used on the same items again and again.
and even if a new best item comes from pure RNG it will just be added to the pool of mirror worthy items or take the place of one of them.

i frankly don't get what they wanted to fix with the change as things will probably be even worse in the future.

TLDR:
in a world with no mirrors eternals are a healthy mechanic.
in a world with no eternals mirrors are still broken, it just takes a lot more to get mirror worthy items but the end result is the same.
in a world that had eternals in the past mirrors are broken above and beyond even if eternals are removed from the game.
regarding item trades: i don't check the forum often so don't send me PMs about the items i have for sale, just add me ingame and contact me when i'm online.

i'm usually online for a few hours after 20.00 UTC and a lot more during weekends.
ya u can use middle men, if you take someone whos 100% legit like zenocide, rich j money, nugi etc, someone like that will act as a middle man, take all the items and currency, mirror it, give the right people back their items, stream the whole thing. Maybe they get paid a fee for it etc.
I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

As has been stated it is much easier to buy a mirrored piece of gear than it is to craft it yourself. I think that is the problem, more than anything else. I find it difficult to find others that agree with me. I think that if anyone puts in enough time they should be able to craft their perfect gear. With the way drops are though that just isn't possible.

I agree with you.
