My guess, you can summon Boss-Type monster with them.
Streanght is based on the number on the card. (1 to 12) The "Boss" has a chance to drop the unique named on the card. “Demons run when a good man goes to war"

Seeing as most of stuff in poe is "cursed" or "twisted", name suggest that it will restore to order or make it good.
Maybe its a new currency for maps, to change modifiers into our favour. Imagine playing summoner and getting Beyond mod and spawning that Abaxoth to fight on your side :P | |

If it is trading cards i wonder if it'll be a WoW TCG style implimentation with super rare pets/skins/effects, i cant see them locking bosses behind it
