Did you go up to the templar area first or down to the duelist?

hello,I go straight to amplify the 8% increased area damage and the increased radius is really good and there are some good notes on the way to boost defence/life.Then i take the duelist area totally.And after that i go inner force,devotion and blunt instrument.

Is there a particular reason to go get inner force and the bonus to buffs? I'm unfamiliar with the theory behind some of these builds so what is that helping and why is it better than dmg/life?
