Should've called the game Path TO Exile - MTG Fan anyone?
Any MTG fans out there?
If so I'm sure when you first heard about this game, the first thing you thought was this: http://magiccards.info/cfx/en/15.html XD I wonder if the devs play MTG lol. |

We came up with the name of our game before that card was printed (we registered the domain name pathofexile.com in 2007 and the Conflux MTG set came out in early 2009).
Having said that, many of our developers really like MTG. We have a famous MTG player on our team too - Brian Weissman (a quick google search will show that he contributed greatly to MTG theory in the mid-late 90s). Lead Developer. Oh yeah; I'm totally keen for Scars of Mirrodin.
Also, it was hilarious when we attended the Conflux Prerelease wearing Path of Exile t-shirts. Everyone was like, "Wow, you must really like that card" and "Dude, you spelled it wrong. It's Path to Exile". Priceless. Code warrior

Haven't played that since 5th edition. Goddamn, I loved the game.

I can't even remember the last edition I played with as i've come back to mtg so many times and the rules have had so many additions and changes that I can barely keep up with it, though I did love my bloom deck.

" Wow, that is awesome! Its pretty convenient that the card turned out to be one of the best 1-drop spot removal cards. Yea Scars looks great so far. Although I'm worried about Infect, hopefully they dont put it on anything too broken. Other than that this set is shaping up to be pretty awesome and those 3 planeswalkers look insane! I hope I'm lucky enough to crack one at the prerelease (hopefully Venser ;) ). On another note, its encouraging to hear that you guys are into magic and I hope it inspires you to do some crazy stuff with the skills system you are putting into the game. XD |

The concept from MTG of "splashing into off-colour cards" is definitely present with our passive skills system. We try to make early passives very appealing to encourage people to spend in off-class attributes. People who focus on their class' main attributes are rewarded with being able to meet requirements of items sooner due to having less diversity.
We actually had lunch with Mark Rosewater (head designer of MTG) last week while we were in the states. He's a great guy. Lead Developer. " Yea! I was thinking that when I first heard about the skill system, part of the reason why it appeals to me. I also hope to find that skill gems turn out to be of differing rarity/value, the same way that cards are in MTG. If you take the addictive nature of Diablo II and put it with the addictive nature of collecting cards from MTG.. then well... lets just say I will probably play the game for a very very long time. " Amazing, having a well known pro on the team AND knowing the developers of magic. I'm in awe! |

Yeah, that is pretty impressive. I started playing MTG when unlimited was just about to go out of print. Stopped after 7th edition. A friend of mine became an official judge. We were all pretty into magic and went to some local tournaments and every prerelease for awhile.
I should really pull my old cards out and sell them now that they are worth far more than what I paid for them, haha! |

" I've been out of MTG for a while, so I read this, and just thought I misread. Then I reread. Then I google'd. And now I'm excited. I loved my Myr deck, and this new set is looking like I may bring it out of retirement. |
