Why did you or your friend quit playing POE?

Miska, there's a massive difference between having all the good stuff drop in an instant and having normal, reasonable drops. Right now, we have unreasonably low drop rates.
3700 hours is more than a year playing 8 hours per day, every day. And only one T1 drop with such a high amount of time invested in the game? If there are 10 T1 items, then this means you should spend 10 years treating this as a job in order to get them all (yes, I know you'd probably have duplicates rather than 1 of each)?

I understand that they want to cater to people that are willin to spend time playing the game. They should not require an unhealthy relationship in order to achieve anything meaningful, though.

I agree, but i still don't see a solution to this problem. Personally i enjoy having so many super rare items to hunt. And when my mjolner dropped, even though i had amassed enough currency to buy 50 of them, still felt good.

I get plenty of good drops, very decent rares, less rare uniques. My goal is not to have every t1 drop.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, what do you want? Should every item have dropped after a certain amount of hours? Isn't it the beauty of PoE that you can load up a map and actually find something that will change your game. If everything would be common, you do realize it wouldn't be an achievement to find any item anymore. I think people don't realize this.

For me personally, it's not so much about the uniques as it is about the rares, or upgrades in general. I think better uniques could maybe use a touch higher droprate, but I'm not talking about a Mjolner dropping every 100 maps. The drop rate on uniques is actually not bad, it's just that practically every single one is trash, though there are a few good ones.

The thing is, GGG doesn't want us to find good items. They want us to find junk, and trade and use currency to craft our own. In over 3k hours of playtime between myself and two friends that still play, we have yet to craft a solid rare item. You see people advertising builds on the forum and in every single slot that have a PERFECT yellow (that was mirrored) -- where the hell do those come from? With as much playtime as we have together, we should have found much better gear than we have. This is the best self-found item we've come across:

And based on the way this game works, we should consider ourselves 'lucky' that we found a decent (not even an amazing) rare bow.

I have a problem with that. That's where path of trading comes in, and where myself and many others lose interest. RNG is RNG, except when it isn't (because computers can't employ true randomness, it's up to us to tell them exactly how 'random' to be). But, this is how GGG wants their game. They aren't interested in us finding fun items and feeling rewarded for our efforts. They want you to trade and craft. Trade and craft, trade and craft, trade and craft. That's the design they want, and that's my biggest complaint about this game, and one of the issues that drives many people away. Like I pointed out in an early post, the 'loot hunt' is WIDELY considered to be an integral part of games of this style. GGG went a different route with their game, and some love it, while most hate it.

In all honesty, I do applaud GGG for sticking with what they want rather than 'selling out' as so many game companies do, because if they made the game the way the majority of us wanted it to be, they would have 10 times the playerbase and all the extra revenue that goes along with that. (I'm not being sarcastic, I really do applaud them for that, even if I wish certain aspects of the game were different)

One thing they could do to make the current system better is implement an auction house of sorts. I know those of you that like the game the way it is have a problem with that, but most people don't have 12 hours a day to sit here and play. They may only have a few hours a day or much less. Maybe they can only play for 30 minutes a day, or a few hours every couple of days, or only on the weekends. Why make them spend their time sitting around playing a trading simulator instead of actually playing an aRPG? An auction house would help the 99% of the playerbase get more involved in the game. Yeah the 1% of the most hardcore people in the game might not like how an AH could change the dynamic of the game economy, but too bad.
I haven't quit but I don't like the idea of having to use 3rd part software (procurement or whatever it's called) to sell stuff. Let's be real spamming the in game trade chat is a waste of time and manually updating the forum shop is not what I want to be doing, I'd rather play the game. That leaves me with only one option...3rd party software. It's just too much faffing about for my liking. They should include something like this as part of the game if you ask me...

"(because computers can't employ true randomness, it's up to us to tell them exactly how 'random' to be)" False.

Unfortunately, an AH just will never be implemented.
We should just accept it and move on. Make the decision now before you throw another 1000hrs at this game and then get annoyed, because we've been told before it's never gonna come, and let's be honest, GGG aren't exactly known for listening to their player base.
Just look at the pages and pages of people have explained why hundreds if not thousands of people have left because of the shitty trading system, and yet:
GGG announce 2.0 MONTHS before it's ready for release (in fact, probably it was before it had even started any major development)
Started off almost entirely as "streamer only" in order to desperately gain traction in the community
Let everyone in... if they're prepared to pay $30 for a f2p game (that will grant huge advantage in two days) <- 'paid preview league'
Then they nerf everything, completely destroy many types of builds and then effectively reintroduce gems that are just old gems that they forgot about
Force players to be EVEN MORE defensive. Because DPS is for idiots, right? Why kill mobs when you can Run through maps pretending to kill things and not die?
Kneejerk nerf anything that has more than 20k DPS
Employees basically dont even play their game
Give in to the retarded SJW/Feminists and change the women on the orbs to Skull/Lion (You have no idea how such a little thing can annoy people, ggg)
Still can't understand how much dmg enemies should be doing (arena trio)
Reflect is no EVEN harder for people to deal with (leech is now rip)
Auras are completely broken now
Damage is for idiots, right? Let's make sure nobody can kill mobs with ease
About to release 2.0 many WEEKS before it's ready
Pretend they care about the community, but clearly don't because when was the last time anything any of us wanted were added or changed in the game?

"4 days to test the new end-game bosses before launch
4 days to test new mapping system before launch
4 days to test new skills before launch"

"muh build diversity" become a total of about 5 viable skills that were always viable because they're remotely well designed skills

It seriously pisses me off.
I have deliberately not wanted to ruin anything from Act 4, but that means that anyone who wanted to pay up their shekels to their goyim overlords at ggg now have a supreme advantage over anyone else in 2.0 because they've paid their "one time fee!" shekels to p2w in this game.
Pathetic.

That's why I'm about to leave a game I have very much enjoyed in a couple of days if this goes wrong.
Not having enough hardcore mentality.
For dying more often then they ought.
For feeling upgrades are out of logical reach.
For unlucky events which ultimately led to selfdestruct.
& For other games, though none they play right now which points to PoE being a really great game.

No, it isn't.

But, I do agree with much of what you said in the rest of your post. My friends and I have been very actively looking for something else to play. We want to give Awakening a chance, but all three of us are more than ready to move on from this game. Just isn't much else for us to play at the moment (as far as games we can play together goes).

Yes, it is.
A poorly coded one will, but using outside, uncontrollable factors like noise, will always generate random integers.
www.random.org
So yes, it was a false statement.
"Perhaps you have wondered how predictable machines like computers can generate randomness. In reality, most random numbers used in computer programs are pseudo-random, which means they are generated in a predictable fashion using a mathematical formula. This is fine for many purposes, but it may not be random in the way you expect if you're used to dice rolls and lottery drawings.

RANDOM.ORG offers true random numbers to anyone on the Internet. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs. People use RANDOM.ORG for holding drawings, lotteries and sweepstakes, to drive online games, for scientific applications and for art and music. The service has existed since 1998 and was built by Dr Mads Haahr of the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland. Today, RANDOM.ORG is operated by Randomness and Integrity Services Ltd.

Seriously of my three 80+lvl chars only a couple of rings are self-found, the rest are trades and bargains. And my friends, who told me about the game, quit playing long time ago just because they don't know english to trade and don't want to play in self-found shit they constantly get (and I sincerely understand them).

On the other hand trade is good, but not perfect, since you have to deal personally instead of actually playing the game. I would like having something like stock exchange for routine orb trading. Because having to distract while farming maps really annoys me.

P.S. Ye and of top currencies I had only 1 exalt dropped evarrr (gg wp GGG ;P) so the bulk of the orbs was traded as well.
Unrewarding.

I didn t invest 3700 hours but still many hundreds to collect bad items. When the unique sounds comes I don t feel anything, I know it will be a bad item, one I already have (as I bought stash tabs to collect them).
That totally screwed the kill to loot system, only by flipping you can start to enjoy the game, I know a lot of fans enjoy subplaying the game at 20% of what it offers, but I don't.

Knowing that GGG use a bad graphic engine just because it s their hand made engine instead of keep the dude who improved the perf by 50% because it implied for them to reconsider their choice. Knowing that each X month they will break everything that is working and kinda affordable.

Keeping outdated systems, like the 3 difficulties, yeah it was cool in the past, the legacy items ...

Atlantica online is more rewarding than this game ....
I think they just should write on the first page "welcome to the casino, if you have thousands of hours to invest and/or have lots of luck come in"

rant over
[edited out so we don't clutter the thread with off-topic discussion]

While some have mentioned the death penalty and such, it seems loot is the most common complaint in this thread. That's definitely my #1 complaint as well. But, I don't think GGG has any intention of changing the loot system. I'm going to give Awakening a shot and see if it adds enough to make up for its shortcomings, and if not, it's going to be time for me to take a long break from this game. It's a great game in some ways, but ultimately it's not what I'm looking for.

I quit because iir and iiq plus summoners just made the game dumb. no point in playing a competitive online game with a vast and important trading market if others can just use summons and stack iir and iiq in high level areas.
