Well... i am a noob concerning all technical details, but i study business, so i know that there is a lot of money in data mining. Grabbing every information you can get, organaize them and there will be some buyer. So at least i could answer your WHY question xD
What i cant answer is if they actually doing it. I quickly ran a AVG check and it told me that the POE-Client is fine. No idea if thats naiv or not xD

Its silly to run a perfectly fine exe file as it is.^^

Did you really think the POE client which runs the game would show up as spyware/virus/trojan kind of thing?

Yes. I expect my AVG to warn me, if some programm read's processes it is not involved in.
Thats my definition of a spyware... please tell me if i am wrong.

Technically if you do use hax programs those should show up as red flags, not the POE exe.

I did a quick bit of research, best answer I can give you is a big maybe.

From what I can gather from the code I've seen and the comments by the hackers examining the client, it only scans the processes in response to some trigger, now whether that trigger is simply 'run when starting' or 'run when x happens' or 'run when the server tells me to' I don't know. When it begins walking the processes it may trigger AVG's malware detection, and it may not. I really couldn't find any AVG documentation that was clear on when they check, it *should* trigger an AVG alarm when the game begins scanning processes - whether it actually does or not is another story.

If I find out more, and can still post on these forums, I'll update this thread.

My 2c anyhow.

PS: The more I think about it, the more I doubt that AVG is the right tool for the job.

Update: Just discovered that reportedly the code is active, at least it is periodically walking the process list. At least as far as I understand it, I mistakenly thought it was only reading its own memory to check for maphack, sorry about that!

Yes, the trigger is memory writes.

So I was right with the first update, eeesh.. ok time for me to sleep, getting confused on what I'm seeing.
Does this really warrant a play-by-play? Can we get a John Madden white board example and a few Madden-like statements?

"You see, in order to win the game -- you have to score more points than the other team!"

or maybe something more suiting:

"You see, you can't stand directly in the sun with your tin foil hat on. The reflection will alert the aliens of your presence and they will be down shortly to collect you and remove your coveted hat!"
Thanks for all the fish!

It doesnt scan any personal files, only programs that interfere with the POE client. And if you dont start the client it doesnt scan anything anyways.
^ ??? So there is a way of running POE without the client?

Or is that not what you meant?

Lol, more like, dont start the client, dont play the game. :P

Seriously, people are too gullible these days, thinking its spyware because someone said so. Thats like if someone at the airport yells, "I GOT A BOMB!" even though there is no damn bomb anywhere people would still run.

Its always funny how people claim to be programmers and working for the government and such on a forum while they really are living with their parents sitting in some room playing video games all day.

Hm nearly 30 posts per day. Impressive feat. It looks like you play the forum warrior game all day. Kinda sad you´re trying to defame someone with a certain behavior that reflect your own pretty much. Is this a subconscious scream for help Dirk? Do you need proper care?
What can never be lent or earned?
Somewhat, that devours everyone and everything:
A tree that rush. A bird that sings. It eat bones and smite the hardest stones.
Masticate every sword. Shatters every shrine. It defeat mighty kings and carry mountains on lightly wings.
What am i?
