I know what you mean. A close female gamer that I've known for about 5 years has done the same thing. While in TS or Ventrilo she uses voice altering software to talk to people in public chat rooms. Only in private PW protected rooms with people she trusts would she use her normal voice.
wow, this seem kind of extreme. is she in the witness protection program that she must protect her identity? :p

It's mainly to stop the creeps. Many male gamers are just a step away from being Miggs (if you get that reference, have a cookie) so women tend to hide their gender in games.
