You should check Blade and Sword and maybe use some ideas. It was released in 2003 and not many people know about this game but it is one of the best D2 clone. It features a coupe of awesome mechanics that allow extensive interaction with both the environment and your enemies, such as jumping over obstacles and picking up enemies, using stamina for dodges and sprint. In additional there was really nice combo system.
