Character Name Conficts

Well.. If you want classic (noob names) like dragon death shadow or mutantspacebatsofdoom u pretty much have to deal with the fact that someone else beat you to it.

Why?

Two kids, one who has his birthday on Monday, and the other on Tuesday. Their parents both get them an account on their birthdays. Kid Monday gets to take any name he likes, while Kid Tuesday misses out, and the reason why is completely arbitrary.

You could use any example, but all mean that one person misses out for arbitrary reasons that have nothing to do with the game itself.

Requiring a unique name is pretty sweet IMO.

In a game like this, i would keep it with unique names. Nothing against having a number/name/email associated with you account, but it just looks like crap on screen and clutters stuff more then it solves.

For an MMO, Im suprised no one has taken the step to force a first and last name, where only the last name has to be unique and is for all characters you create afterwards.

In my case, i would pick Bloodthorne as my last name. And as first names e.g. you could take John, Pete, or whatever name you want. This system also allows you to create recognition between character. In chat, the name used would still be Bloodthorne in my case.

That way, all you need to do is get your main name that you like. And if it's taken, you are not very original with your name. Trust me i had that issue (started with the name Blade, just imagine how many had the same ign :P ), but trying to distinguish myself i came up with new names and over time i created a completely new name 3 times.
Of course if you want to change your name, you should be able to do it somehow, but the change would be across all characters.

This cant be done like this with account name, as account names usually cant change after creation.

I always felt this was the way to do it and in multiple games i did that. To me it had no downside.
I just wanted to expand on what already have been said here.

I'm a new player, installed PoE yesterday and was really excited to try it out. After spending about half an hour trying to name my first Templar character I gave up and closed the game. A really annoying first impression.

1. I tried most of my old World of Warcraft character names. All taken.
2. I tried some names I could think of that were cool. All taken.
3. I looked up cool old names for real Templars. All I tried was taken.
4. I found a random name generator (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/tool.aspx?x=dnd/4new/tool/cng). After trying out about 8-10 random names I liked, I finally gave up.

To note, I was looking for names that sounded cool, not stupid names like Besttemplarever, Awesomedude, Killerguy, etc. I will probably try again soon, really want to play the game, but I just wanted to tell you my first impression of this naming policy that can really hinder new players.

Since it's few servers (3, right?) and Free to Play game, the number of registered characters will be really high, making new names really hard to find. I thought that if they would allow some unique characters it could solve the problem to some extent. Something like "Apo'Strophe", "Steve Middle Lastname", "Guynumber2", "Ícélándíc" (icelandic or other unicode characters) or something other I can't think of.

Hope the developers will take this into consideration.

Regards,
Gunnar

Is it possible the server could at least detect if they name is unavailable because I'm using it? I mean obviously it doesn't matter if a character was previously named Epicly_Curious if it can never be online at the same time as me, because it's my other character.

I see you can use underscore for your character names. That I didn't know. Could have saved me some trouble. Need some sort of tooltip that tells you what characters are allowed in the naming policy.

Also, an underscore really isn't suitable character for names. Something like apostrophe ( ' ) is actually used in the real world and in a lot of fantasy names. Seems more appropriate to me :)

EpiclyCurious and Epicly'Curious are not taken either. It's just when I want to use a space in a name I use an underscore if permitted, since we use rows of them for blank lines. "The answer is _______"

I've been playing this for a WHILE now. Personally, I don't think character names should ever be unique. If I want to create 2 characters named Superman under my account, I should be able to. When you mouse over a character, it should show the account name, just like it shows the level. The social window shows everyone by account name ANYWAY, not by character name.

You can use a part of your account name as a suffix for all your characters, that will let you use whatever name you want and help identify your characters to friends and guildmates.

For example:

Aurora_Gunn
Raven_Gunn
I don't want anyone to have the same name as my char(s), it has its own identity, and therefore I want it to be unique.

If you wanna use the same name, prefix it.
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.
