What about a "system" like that false D3 tester claimed D3 had before the AH was revealed - Town Market HUB games with 30-50 ppl in towns (the entire game is a big town-level, nothing else, anyone can host one as long as the current ones are almost full, and anyone can join), where everyone can hold barters and auctions as they want, all over that level - like a RL ancient forum or marketplace. It would help player-invented systems to take hold and it woudl feel realistic and have a just right amount of chaos to it.

My point is - don't implement a specific point system or you could just implement gold again. Just let the players come up with systems and use it. After a year, there will be sub-cultures that use other systems than the "publicy agreed-upon generally-used market system", some will just want to trade useful items for other useful items, etc.

It woudl be the players game and the players ingame market.

I think easiest system for auction is something like this:

1. Player1 put some item to auction (item placed to auction) (for 24h max for example)
2. Player2,3,4 see this item on auction and send some kind of messages to Player1 through auction - with their offers (offered items taken from players until they cancel offer or their offers canceled by Player1 or smth like this)
3. Player1 choose the best offer. End.
