Look at the next timer "Georules", by my time, he created the account 2 minutes ago. Basicly, instant beta or at least within a range of 2-3 hours I guess. Nice one, GGG.

Beta timer gives out keys to users who have registered on this page months ago and never posted or visited the page again. This is where the fooling part kicks in...
People are still excited as they see beta keys are given out. Everybody have high hopes for getting a key but keys are mainly given out to inactive/passive users. Those keys are never used. This means the total amount of beta users is increasing. But the number of new active users who are going to activate their beta account and actually try out the game is very low. They already have enough beta testers and there is no need for more.
I understand computer games are a business and GGG needs to keep people interested in the game while Diablo 3 is knocking at the door.
This is my opinion about the current situation, feel free to express yours.
Hmmm.... guess what? I am going to join the people that never revisit their account because the chances are higher than trying to get it artificially. I will just go with the flow like the other 999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 people waiting for the random timer to call out their name. At least it will be less painful.
Until i get into the beta or when the game gets released. Cya later...

I'm sorry, I know it's not the focus of the thread, but I can't help it when people say stupid things...

Blizzard is a corrupt, money-hungry company. They do things like let people in just for knowing someone that works there.
...WTF? They're so money-hungry they give free stuff to their friends?
Those avaricious fiends!
C'mon. Develop a coherent framework for your hatred.
EDIT: Now that I think about it, the sentiment behind it is the same as the OP. There's a bunch of entitlement there, and ensuing outrage at not receiving what they feel rightfully belongs to them, that instead it is going to someone "unworthy."

- This is the part i call fooling people...If GGG is happy about the current number of testers they should indeed stop the timer. People are hoping to get an invite but 90% of keys are going out to inactive users.
- Yes, if you get into beta you have to be active or you are useless...Beta user has to give feedback about the game, how to improve,to report bugs etc.
- Another wow...There has always been dishonest people who are willing to cheat. if GGG creates a game they have to take care that the game is enjoyable to everybody. It is their responsibility to prevent those people ruining the experience for others. If they don`t do anyhing, things like 5000 keys given out and less than 100 people online will happen!
- Yea, it will definitely create more feedback about the game...you can call it spam if you wish but i don`t think that way.
Some things to consider SethRa.
[list]
- I'm sure if GGG wanted/needed the influx of Testers to stop then they would do just that. You say that 90% of Keys are going to inactive users, but you can't create an equivalency between "inactive on the forum" and "never going to log in and test" - there are plenty of people who do nothing more than browse the forum simply because until they have a Key they really have nothing to say. You think GGG are deliberately trying to "fool" us by leaving the timer up there. What is it that you think they gain by doing this? I can't see any real benefit to them in fooling their customer base.
- Again, not being active on the forum before you get a key is NOT the same thing as being a useless Beta tester
- True enough there will always be cheaters. Little can be done about that, although GGG has moved to kick those who have been shown to be cheating at times. Remember though that this is a Beta Test, it is not a proper published game yet and as such GGG are not under any "responsibility" to prevent cheaters from ruining your experience. The Beta Tester is (at this stage) providing a service to GGG, not the other way 'round.
- The issue here is that people who aren't in the Beta yet have nothing much to provide feedback about. So if you link the giving of keys to the number of forum posts as you seem to be suggesting, then what you get will be a tide of spam and not feedback at all.
I'm not trying to be contentious here SethRa, just airing a few thoughts that occurred to me while reading your post.
