New Chisel Recipe is Lame

Path of Trading. Why do people seem to forget that? You are not supposed to go with your high level character to farm low level content, you are supposed to trade for those hammers.

The intention, reasonable or not, was to create incentive for players who stick to high level characters to profit from brief rerolls and races. More than likely it'll just encourage trading, I agree. I sure would like a 1-month self-found league.

20 whetstones are worth more than 1 chisel.

So it is not enough to hunt for hammers, you need quality hammers.

Therefore this recipe is similar to the Divine Orb recipe: dead on arrival.

White stone hammers require 4.. no one is going to waste their time with blue+ stone hammers. Please can we all assume everyone is talking about white stone hammers that require only 4 whetstones? Thanks.

You can trade any Map and a 20% quality Stone Hammer for a Cartographer's Chisel

=> any tone hammer, so white should work, using 20 whetstones would be dumb ...
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.
As long as its part of a bigger picture we can't see yet I'm fine with the new recipe. Each new act the vendors sell 1 more "quality boosting currency" that the previous acts didn't. Act 1 sells Armor Scraps, Act 2 sells Whetstones, Act 3 sells Baubles. Act 4 can't be too far away, can it? If the follow the pattern, it's gotta sell either GCPs or chisels. My money's on chisels.
There are (were; haven't tried after 1.0's drop rate changes) certain benefits to farming low level areas, for low-wealth or low-time investment players. They offer small, but consistent, rewards, and allow an avenue for such players to develop their wealth and sustain better farming areas for better profits.

In that regard, the recipe is a welcome addition, as it provides something other than alteration shards (low level vendor rares), chance (low level uniques), and infrequent lottery drops (low level uniques still forth 10+ chaos) for such players wishing to develop their trading stature.

On the other hand, if you were looking for a self found, self sustainable method of applying quality to your maps, you will be disappointed. There will be, overall, more chisels in circulation, which is still a benefit, but you won't be sustaining four chisels per map from just mapping, if that's what you're after.

Overall the recipe is more benefit than not.

I don't see it much better than the current chisel recipe. The people it benefits the most are those not running maps.

Ooh. Gavels. Yup
I suppose it gives the low level bots something to do. Its a strange choice of mats for a recipe meant to help high level players making them farm low level content.
