What do you wish you would have been told when you first started playing? (SPOILERS)

I only wish I had been told of this game's existence much sooner :)

To get good at the short race events, do a couple dozen runs up to the Brutus boss fight, and try to kill him by the 30 minute mark. The rest of the race isn't quite as important as the start.

Plan a good build if you want to make it to end-game, getting stuck with a fragile build in Ruthless/Merciless totally sucks, especially in Hardcore.

you wouldn't really want to be doing events though if you just start out would you? I think OP means like, what would you tell yourself to do different right at the start of the game. I don't think people do events until they understand the game pretty well :P

I did last night, and I had a ton of fun. And I didnt know any of the tips ppl are giving in this thread :)
-Learning vendor recipes

-Grabbing as many life and survivability nodes as possible.

Strange enough. a good portion of my playtime with this game is working on my race strategy. I started out mostly only competing in the races while i worked n studied n stuffs. Ive made lots n lots of HC characters n got them through normal n cruel many a time. Only been to end game 2 times hah.

Edit: i just work night shifts n end up sleeping through most of them.. lol crap.

The race tip is actually a great tip to put up. For, i cannot even imagine how many people, the races are addictive and hella fun. Trying to learn how to survive and actually be good at it, to not die can and will be a huge, huge staple for this game.

Keep up a tight race schedule so people have an opportunity to play and this game will keep and addict many many more people. All it takes is one race-

So that is another tip - only participate in a race if you want to be prepared to juggle time and try to fit any and all races into your schedule, for they are probably the funnest (YES ITS A WORD) :) thing i have played in a long, long time.

My beloved pets....
1 - That there is an option to turn the cornermap ON(!). I still don´t get why this is off by default. I mean, GGG really implemented some noob-friendly and -appealing mechanics (like HC chars being moved to Default instead of permanent death), so why is THE most important (or at least one of the top five) functions of any ARPG hidden behind "press O, select UI-tab, check a box"? I don´t get it...

2 - Orb-values! I wasted an Exalted on a lvl30 rapier and a GCP on my added colddmg. Thanks a lot guys, how should I figure out the value of orbs by myself if some of the rarest ones drop on Cruel?

3 - What does Chaos-dmg do? When do I become frozen or shocked? Why does what how? The mechanics are cryptic as hell! I like them though. There is some cool and thought-out stuff behind this. GGG, if you read this: Be proud and share your thoughts with the players ingame!

4 - Recipes! Awesome thing, why don´t you give us ANY clues about this? GGG look, I can come up with an idea to tell players about recipes (this is a 5-minute-idea, so I am sure you can think of something better): Add an automatic reward to the Hillock-quest, "access to the recipe book", which is from this time on shared among all our chars of the same league. There is a little unused space at the lower left (next to the social, options etc. buttons) from where you open the recipebook. Whenever an item that belongs to a recipe drops, is traded or available in the vendor-screen the button will shine golden (being discrete but nonetheless creating attention) and a new recipe is "unlocked" (not like achievement stuff which is dumb), giving us the feeling of our chars gathering knowledge of Wraeclast, in a Pen-and-Paper-style. You can open this recipe book anytime and check for the things you need, lets say armourers scrap. So the player knows he has to collect some more armorpieces with +% quality to trade in a scrap. This would add even more feeling of exploration and discovery.
Hell, you could rename this recipe book to journal and let us collect information on the mechanics (see #3), ie. when we defeated our first cold-dmg-enemy there would be added some information on colddmg and the way chill and freeze works, or when we deal our 100th crit we get information on the way critdmg works and so on

5 - The "Medicine Chest" is optional. Basically the first lesson the game teaches me is "Do not do, what you are told to do! Go on instead and kill some random mobs and don´t give a damn about the questbook." btw.: where is the questbook? (Tell us! Again, cryptic stuff does not equal difficulty/challenge, it´s just annoying)

6 - That all other games (D§ is the best example) become boring, mindless and frustrating in comparison to this awesome game...

7 - That this game literally eats life. I don´t want to do anything else anymore. And this is still beta. OMG, I am doomed.

Thanks for reading and thanks for this fantastic inspiring holy grail of gaming.

best regards

That necromancers can't resurrect anything that has been exploded, shattered or otherwise destroyed. So much less frustration. :-D
Sorry, but isn't that common sense? A necromancer don't create a body out of nothing. He resurrect a dead body, so if the body has exploded, shattered etc, there's nothing left to resurrect. On a side-note, I remember playing Diablo 2 with a necromancer. I often found myself in a race with an enemy toward the corpses. He wanted to resurrect them, I wanted to blow them up. And yes, I did have the Benny Hill theme playing in my head many, many times. :D

On-topic:

- I wish I had known about the quest log. It took me forever to figure out what to do once I reached the first town. Embarassing, I know. But hey, all we have are tiny icons under the map. Kinda hard to miss. ;)

- Wish I had known when the release date for the OB was, so I wouldn't spoil Act 1 and a large part of Act 2. I like to go through the whole thing fresh, not do the same thing over and over.

- Wish I had known how bad Torchlight 2 was, so I could have focused more on PoE.

Draeke, 42 HC Marauder died from a one shot... First HC char.

In hindsight, what is something you wish you would have known right out of the box as a brand new player?

1- I wish i would have realized how rare some orbs were and not used the first 5 i picked up. A regal, alchemy, GCP, chaos and chance. The GCP is still the only 1 i have looted to this day.

2- watch items on the ground for Superior mods, pick up and store them until you can turn in a combo for armorer scraps and blacksmith whetstones. Also watch the item sockets and any that have a Green, Blue and Red sockets that are linked can be turned in for a chromatic orb.

3- most of the bosses have a certain resistance you need in order to beat them, make sure you stack the proper resistance before you try them, get frustrated and die a few times.

Also a link to the FAQ - http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/36608

I'm still pretty new...3 days old. Point number 2. uhhhhh what?
If anyone would elaborate on "turning in a combo" and turning in items in general that would be awesome.

Can anyone direct me anywhere to read about crafting and efficient use of orbs?

Thanks guys!

Or am I just an idiot and you are saying that an item with 3 diff colors linked trades to a vendor for a chromatic and superior weapons and armor trade in for their respective tools....
