Combat should be more intense than spamming 1 move
When I introduce path of exile to new players they ask me how to make a good build.
I tell them "pick 1 ability that deals damage, whatever you like. Doesnt matter whether its single target or aoe. Once you gem correctly all moves are aoe. Make sure you like because you will spend 95% of combat spamming it." Theres no denying that for the vast majority of builds end game you have 1 or 2 damaging ability and a handful of support abilities: maybe taunt totem, enduring cry, and maybe a curse (dont use curses if you group play so thats even less abilities) Most builds actually become LESS complicated the higher level you get. You begin the game with no support gems so you can use tons of different damaging abilities. As you slap more and more support gems onto 1 ability it eventually outclasses all other abilities you have. This is incredibly backwards thinking on GGG's part. Other diablo-clones such as torch light 2 and diablo 3 have systems that encourage you use multiple abilities in combat. Torch light has lots of abilities with varying cooldown length in addition to having 1 'core' ability you spam over and over. You can easily use 5 or more abilities in just 1 quick battle. D3 is even more complicated not only do you have a mixture of cooldown and none cooldown abilities but resources are actually limited in the short term (no infinite mana potions) so you need to actually manage your mana/rage/energy/discipline in combat (each class has a different resource with slightly different rules about how to restore it). Path of exile is 1 or 2 core damaging abilities and infinite mana. The trigger gems I think take us on the wrong directions. PoE already has plenty of passive abilitiies but we need more active stuff. This thread has been automatically archived. Replies are disabled.

" I agree and not many understand why ARPGs have an A in front of ARPG. There's plenty of Action missing in POE , but GGG has decided they want it this way and they focused on the systems. (which is what we all love from POE). So i guess my opinion is that maybe they'll do something about that in the future, but i honestly think it won't change. I'd like to have more than just my Infernal blow spam, flammability curse, adn now thank to god for cast on damage taken so i can actually at least see more spell effects even if i dont do shit, i get molten/rejuv totem/enduring on damage taken. But casting molten rejuv and enduring is not something tactical or action oriented, its just spam that shit when its duration ends. There's no tactical choice of flow in combat, its spam attack -> recast everything -> spam attack. And its fine, it doesn't need to be more complex, although i would love it to be more complex. |

hated tl2 and d3. Played tl1 a lot, it was like d2/d1 where you had a primary skill, and sometimes a secondardy for a different enemy type/different effect.
I see no problem with this. I enjoy playing the game as it is. The combat is more intense than one move for some builds, inva's old shadow build from a long time ago (melee CI before GR) back in CB had multiple different damage dealing skills and gameplay mechanics all worked in, without many curses even. So just because you can build a build that doens't use anything except RMB doesn't mean other builds don't exist that function better Even a simple Explosive Arrow build uses a ton more. You have the splitshot+chain for EE debuff, the actual arrow 5 times, then the splitshot+chain again for a second EE debuff, plus the flammability curse, and if you have dual curses theres also ele weakness, all while you have mboility, and perhaps a totem aswell Last edited by Real_Wolf#6784 on Nov 4, 2013, 5:30:17 PM

" Not just that but its going to drive other players and give them bad publicity. The actual combat of an arpg will always be more importaint than the process of building. Because you spend more time doing combat than any other part of the game. There exist wonderful action rpgs that have paper-thin building or non-existant building (ys origin, secret of mana series). Most players that I try to introduce PoE to quit before reaching level 30 because they get tired of only spamming 1 fucking ability, frankly I don't blame them. |

this wont happen, most likely
desync is already a huge issue in the game. movement skills like whirling blades or leap slam desync like crazy. so movement skills are out of the question more or less plus the gem system is basically bounded by # of gems. the gems in a 6L will always be more powerful and useful than in other slots. as such youll only be able to have 1 or 2 max main abilities. it is what it is |

GGG can easy improve it just implementing something like cool down skill gems that increase the dmg of linked skill by 300% dmg but adds a small cool down of 3 or more seconds. Than you would use more diferent dmg skill to do spike dmg when you need it

" sure you can play that way if you want to suck at the game. you are the one who chooses your build, if you are choosing to only ever use 1 skill you are gimping yourself and those you are teaching. i like to have fun when i play so i build accordingly, only way to figure out what you like is to test them all is what i would tell them instead. forget about "competing" on the ladder or trying to amass wealth...have fun ffs and those things will follow you. ~SotW HC Guild~

"This is a very stupid way to play. It does not surprise me at all that you are the author of numerous QQ threads. I actually wrote an entire thread (with pictures!) about how this is not the way to go. http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/570561 When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

I still don't understand.
There are tons of skill combinations which take more than just spamming one move. In most RPG's I have played, you have your generic 'use on everything' that you use to kill the 'trash white mobs', and then for the challenging fights you have the more complex combinations. This is the same in PoE. For killing white trash mobs, you can just use one aoe skill, because they are white trash mobs. For the more powerful magic or rares, you CAN gear yourself and stat yourself to just have one skill and no utility/curses/mobility etc, but the best builds usually have at least 2-3 skills, though one is the dps, and plenty of very good builds have a large number of active skills, to the point of 5-6 and running out of space. My combat on some of my characters is so busy that I am non-stop using skills, often combination of skills, or moving. No downtime of just standing there spamming one move. And then thers other builds (notoriously my chaos char) where I use my skills then I pretty much afk waiting for things to die. Its all up to you for how much depth you put into your active skills, and if you add a lot of depth it CAN make your character more powerful than it would be as a 'one spam move' Take explosive arrow, one of my favourite builds. At its minimum its two moves, you spam split arrow for its debuff, but you really don't use it for damage, it deals none. Still, a lot of fun to use |

I definitely use multiple skills with all my characters, especially now they nerfed cleave. Can you really solo end-game content without using at least 1 movement skill, curse, totem, and a good single-target skill? (I used to use utility skills too, but those are now automatic...)
Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:
