Long cooldowns to diversify combat?
I recently played D3 for the forst time and one of the things that game does good is that you use multiple skills in combat (which from the interview was the intention behind the free-spec system).
In PoE with sockets it seems it pays the most to just buff one combat skill the most. Most my characters have 1 AoE skill, 1 single target skill, 1 curse, 1 shout, 1 aura. It kinda gets boring when all I do is leap slam, leap slam, leap slam. Maybe if some skills were reworked and had a long cooldown, you would be forced to use a couple of combat skills. Like if the leapslam was buffed alot but had like 10 second cooldown, so I would leapslam into a group of enemies stunning them and such, but then I'd finish tchem off with like a ground slam, which would be spammable. What dou you think guys? |

Why? If you want to cast something different just swap out your main ability for a while?

Agree.
Personally i would like to see some nice OP skills like Cold Snap with a cooldown. That way you can alternate between skills. E.G. imagine if there was a piety lightning ball that had a 1 second cooldown? Or a Meteor that had a 2 second cooldown Will add a new dimension to lightning and fire builds... Ice builds already have cold snap but would prefer something cooler, e.g. ice dragon? (AoE cone flying across skill) there are so many possibilities with CD skills. The rest of the 'end-game' content will be available along with a heap of new stuff when the game launches in a few months time. From what I've seen it's going to be awesome. - Michael_GGG

" why is it anyone who has a new idea gets shot down? It's like when i suggested no queue PvP and people were like... don't like queueing?? THEN DONT PVP! So many people hate change when it's change for the better? Logic fail. You can always make a build which is more "interesting" to play - and it could also be effective. Think about Elemental equilibrium with a caster, or integrate a lighning based attack into a crit build to spread shock between you spamming your main attack.
Than there are some dot effects which you might want to stack. E.g. physical 2-handed sword build with a main attack, viper and puncture + maybe throw firetraps (so you have bleeding, poisen and burning damage) and it all synergises with the Vulnerability curse (your main damage skill physical dam will be increased and all DOTs are more effective) The game certainly allows you to make some combinations/builds which could effectively use multiple skills. " Cold Snap has a 4 second cool down. You can bypass that by using a power charge though. “Demons run when a good man goes to war"

You can easily make a build where you use Leap Slam purely for utility purposes, maybe to get around quicker or to stun a group of monsters effectively (via Faster Attacks or Stun gem). You're not forced to spam any ability and I think it's actually quite interesting to find out different uses for each gem. It's what some people may call "creating a build".
In fact, cooldowns in D3 were the thing that pissed me off the most about the skill system. It forces you to have a specific playstyle much more than having complete freedom over your abilities. "pls doge"

" actually, skills with sub 2 second cooldowns are fine. 10 sec cooldown skills have no place in an ARPG however. | |
" Why? Seem's like an arbitrary statement. D3 has plenty of skills like that, so does Torch2. Last edited by enkidu44#1948 on Sep 9, 2013, 6:46:19 AM

I noticed a lot of people dont like to have cooldowns, and also a lot of people like it. So why not give options that both type of players can use?
Something like new support gem that increases the damage of skill for 300% but adds a small cooldown of 4 sec. So people that like that type of play style will use the support gem, people that dont will not, everyone happy |
