Point blank passive?

I don't know if anyone still cares, but I ballparked some distances using the wiki and Cold Snap. The break even distance (0% damage bonus/penalty) should be about the distance from your character to the edge of your screen horizontally on a resolution of 1920x1080. Meaning, generally, if you are shooting enemies that are in view on your screen, you will be gaining SOME damage bonus (unless you are firing at the far diagnol corners of the screen, then you may suffer a reduction). For full damage bonus, you would need to be within DOUBLE the melee range of a one-handed melee weapon. So you don't necessarily have to be getting hit for the max damage, but it IS pretty close. It does make for a nice ace in the hole though, if something is closing in on you, you end up hit harder and harder as it gets to you, and if you are very aware of your dps and the enemy's health, you may find that you are certain the creature will die before laying a hand on you. Just some food for thought.

Also, I play with my friends a lot, so I can position myself reasonably close without being in certain danger, since they are way more tanky.

Thanks, that is actually very helpful.

I know I am a scrub lowbie 25 character on HC, and this is my first char so I am going to assume my opinion doesn't necessarily mean much.

However I took the passive simply because of what this guy said, I don't like being close to hit at all, and avoid being hit. If something is chasing me and about to melee me, I want to kill it asap.

Therefore I took the passive because of that. Also to note, I play solo.

You're welcome, but just FYI take what I said with a grain of salt. I'm hardly a pro at the game, and that was the first forum post I bothered to submit here. I just figured I may as well give people some reference since its hard to know how the distances relate to Point Blank without some point of reference. We used the Cold Snap spell as a ruler.

Let us know how it works out for you, or if you feel it is effective or ineffective in practice. I've been using the PB support gem on some skills, but I am close to unlocking the passive and removing the supports.
it would be amazing if this skill worked with etherial knives.

As is, the best use for this at the moment I can see is lighting strike.

This comes in very useful for a Rain of Arrows build where mobs are often if not on top of you, quite close. And when they are closing, what you want is to kill them fast, naturally.

Is it worth the loss of damage at extreme range? Depends on your playstyle. I've found it beneficial so far.

Running a level 95 Ranger. Tried many builds (incl. Voltax-Crit), but my current build works better, both in solo and in groups, and it uses Point Blank.

I find that doing less damage at very long range keeps me alive when critting those pesky off-screen reflect mobs.

Solo: Ranged monsters do not hit me (Evasion/Ondars and Dodge), melee monsters run into a killing zone. So in a mixed group I kill the melee monsters first, then run up to the ranged monsters and kill them. Works well for me.

In parties, I find that once parties consist of experienced 93+ players (or so), the whole dynamic changes. Everyone is on quicksilver all of the time and killing as fast as possible. If you know you have to do 100+ maps for another level, you want to do them as fast as possible.

So I am in point blank range most of the time anyway, and might as well do the extra damage. Non-bosses die too fast to get more than one or two hits in, so the danger is almost nil.

PB is a great passive.

You must be practically braindead to not think of PB + Chin Sol + RoA + Conc effect.

Just stack +phys, %phys and hp and you have a cheap tanky build that melts stuff.
Why are you people so bad at this?

Spectral Throw & Slower Projectiles & Point Blank.

Melt everything.

this thread is nice! fun to see how it shifted from "nah that sucks" to "great passive, just take it"

friend of mine played a meele bow ranger, and we used to call him the shotgun because that's what he was...point blank plus a Chin Sol and u'll be like a close-combat Legolas
