What's your definition of viable? A lot of people on forums like to build entirely offensive with only a few hp nodes and then manage to die several times before they even get to reach Act II. My personal definition of viable is being able to solo or take hits in a full group, on hardcore. DPS doesn't mean anything; I focus on survivability and then DPS.

Post a point blank build? No thanks, I'd rather it not become the next cookie cutter build for lazy people, and I don't really have a taste for e-fame.

Also a side note, Any class can be a "ranger" or a "duelist"

I actually agree with your definition of viability but you shouldnt critizise people for not being creative while not coming up with anything yourself.

Also a side note, you can give a monkey a sniper rifle but that doesnt make him a marksman.

Like I said, I don't pursue e-fame for coming up with the next cookie cutter.

Yeah... sure dude, sure
I've seen someone from GGG on here say that weapon attacks for multiple projectiles only make one to-hit check or one to-crit check. I've also read that at the moment only 1 projectile per target can be struck when using multiple projectiles.

Does that mean if you used Point Blank with some kind of elemental attack with greater multiple projectiles attached to it, that the 50 percent damage bonus would apply to all arrows as long as you fired "at" someone right in your face?

Food for thought!

hey guys, thought I'd pop in and comment. My main is a lvl 52 Marauder who has Iron Reflexes, Bloog magic, Iron Grip, and Point Blank keystones.
He is very defensive with high life regen and my main attack skill is Rain of Arrows + Inc. attack speed, added fire damage, and life gain on hit.

With high defense and point blank I can gather up alot of enemies and just spam Rain of Arrows to drop the group while they pound on me. No problem.

As for bosses I have Elemental hit + weapon elemental damage, faster projectiles , and life leech. They can pound on me all they want but at point blank I deal so much damage that they drop very quickly.

Just my experience with it. This is of course, a character whose skills and defenses have been structured around having the point blank keystone. However, it is very effective for how I play.

As far as from a distance, it does significantly reduce damage output, but you can still be effective from a distance.

For example I use Explosive arrows + multi projectiles for damage from distance because the explosion damage isn't affected by point blank.

Food for thought.

Projectile attacks deal up to 50% more Damage to very close targets, but deal less Damage to farther away targets

How close those targets have to be? Anyone knows?

Within melee distance i think.

My beloved pets....
There is a support skill for point blank. I believe it would be better to have this on one attack and that way you would have both long range and the short range point blank attack available.

Lightning Arrow, Fork, Point Blank

Lighning Arrow + whatever

I don't know if anyone still cares, but I ballparked some distances using the wiki and Cold Snap. The break even distance (0% damage bonus/penalty) should be about the distance from your character to the edge of your screen horizontally on a resolution of 1920x1080. Meaning, generally, if you are shooting enemies that are in view on your screen, you will be gaining SOME damage bonus (unless you are firing at the far diagnol corners of the screen, then you may suffer a reduction). For full damage bonus, you would need to be within DOUBLE the melee range of a one-handed melee weapon. So you don't necessarily have to be getting hit for the max damage, but it IS pretty close. It does make for a nice ace in the hole though, if something is closing in on you, you end up hit harder and harder as it gets to you, and if you are very aware of your dps and the enemy's health, you may find that you are certain the creature will die before laying a hand on you. Just some food for thought.

Also, I play with my friends a lot, so I can position myself reasonably close without being in certain danger, since they are way more tanky.

CRITICAL EDIT: Miscalculation on my part, sorry. Amateur mistake of treating the Cold Snap AOE as a diameter not a radius. Recalculated the distances with two friends using 120 maximum arrow range and the map to gauge distance. 0% Break Even on Point Blank is the VERTICAL distance from your character to the TOP of the screen at a resolution of 1920x1080. Meaning the range is definitely SHORTER than my original statement. However, still can be useful. I'm gonna keep my PB Passive for a bit and see how effectively I can manage range.

a lot of hate for solo builds in this thread
renting this space - 1 gcp/month
From the wiki:

"
Damage bonus/penalty is as follows:

Distance 0 to 10: 50%
Distance 10 to 35: scales linearly from 50% down to 0%
Distance 35 to 120: scales linearly from 0% down to -100%

For reference, melee weapon range is 5 for one-handed and 6 for two-handed weapons, cold snap has an area of effect radius of 15, and 120 is the maximum distance it's possible to shoot an arrow - it's usually impossible to reach the maximum distance except sometimes when firing at the upper corners of the screen.

Ethereal Knives would work well with Point Blank I suppose.

edit: Oh no, propably not because it's a spell.
