Biggest noob traps in PoE?
Trusting GGG when they tell the "revamp" word (bow, 2 hand weapon, curses, brands, ascendencies, gems ...) and thinking it will be better after the patch ...

Ok, a serious response.
Most common newbie mistake is prioritizing OFFENSE too much. You need a lot of defense. Second most common newbie mistake is to equip too many uniques. Newbies should be in all or almost all rares. Third most common mistake, not understanding the difference between attacks and spells. Mixing them up in both support gems and passive tree bonuses. Newbies: Get a high life roll on all your rare gear. Get resists on all your rare gear. Get % increased max life as MUCH AS POSSIBLE on the passive skill tree. Try and beef up at least one additional defense, block, armor, evasion, or life regen. Attack skill damage is based on the base damage of your weapon. If you are using attacks, you must constantly upgrade your weapon as you level. Spell skill damage is based on the gem level of the skill. This will naturally go up as you level. Weapon damage has no effect. The following list is how challenging some build types are FOR NEWBIES. Melee is hardest Bow (non dot) is next Spell (non dot) is next Dot builds are next (and fire and forget spells like brands and totems) Easiest is Minions. Good luck newbies! Underestimating how incredibly deep and complex the game is. More than a year after starting playing, several hundred hours deep, I discovered how many important game mechanics I was unaware of.

Comparing yourself to streamer/reddit/forums. Unless you're following a guide, then you should compare to the guide. Unless the guide is misleading with its definition of 'budget' or '30m dps', then the comparison is once again a noob trap.

Learn how to read a build guide.
It's like car repairs. "Cheap, fast, or good: pick any two, can't have all three" A cheap, fast build (league starter) won't be very good in the endgame as-is. It will feel squishy and end up burning you out because you hit a hard wall. A cheap, good build (all-rounder) will be slow as dirt, feel clunky and micro-ey, and perhaps in the case of melee skills, have T-Rex melee reach and tiny AOE so you're working much harder to multitask to get mileage out of this build. Some of these are amazing builds that just dominate endgame bosses, but only if you're 16 and your reflexes are sharp. A fast, good build is out of the reach of the average noob. Maybe try again next league when you know what you're doing. And then there's summoner, which is all of these things and really hard to fuck up. Sadly players who have figured this one out, made it too good and now the nerf hammer is focused on all these nails sticking up out of the plywood of mediocrity.
