Zeto, this forum is very lucky to have you as a mod. You know when to put your foot down and when to let things play out. Elsewhere, I've found myself gingerly posting for fear of somehow invoking a mod's wrath or breaking some little-known rule. My posts are often seen as inflammatory simply because I do speak my mind, but I think you have shown uncommon appreciation not only for opinion vs fact but also (and this is much rarer still) the value of opinion despite the facts. If all we did was discuss facts, this would be one very boring forum indeed.

Certain truths are immutable, yes, but we live in far too dynamic a world to get locked into any one phase of 'truth'. I think that's where opinion's value becomes apparent. It allows us to acknowledge the truth and form belief. Opinions are flexible, but that doesn't mean they have to be flimsy or weak.

Although I'm not sure if you meant 'wise' or 'wizened', because plenty of 'wizened' individuals are pretty stupid -- stupid young people generally develop into stupid old people. I have often played the 'role' of the wizened individual online but that's all it was. Not too long ago I realised that pretending to be old and wise is a lot more fun than the possibility of actually being it.

Tagek: I cannot argue against a flying Mercedes because I really want one. Or at least an ambphibious Volkswagen. :)

If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
First, thank you very much :) *cough* spread the word *cough*

Second, to defend my mistake of wizened:

Wise

Etymology 3
From Middle English wisen (“to advise, direct”), from Old English wisian (“to show the way, guide, direct”), from Proto-Germanic *wīsanan, *wīsijanan (“to show the way, dispense knowledge”), from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to know”). Cognate with Dutch wijzen (“to indicate, point out”), German weisen (“to show, indicate”), Danish vise (“to show”).

So wisen I guess, not wizened... shriveled and old not so much part of it :P

Third, none of this discussion about color and pooping rainbows would have happened if they hadn't ruined the game by making it a bright cartoon :P How's that for inflammatory!

Back on a serious note, I don't think they actually ruined the game, although I do think they mangled the progression and consistent mood that D1 to D2 set precedent for.

They clearly did something wrong, because you simply didn't hear people saying this stuff about D1 or D2 (nor a bunch of other dark fantasy games.) So the very fact that these types of interactions exist within the community, does show that the dynamic HAS changed.

Not everyone will consider these changes bad, and some people will consider them horrendous and blasphemous... but at the end of the day everyone should agree on an objective level that things did change substantially.

Changed my post because I misunderstood.

Saying they clearly did something wrong because no one complained in D1-D2 makes no sense really.

The reason people are complaining now is because they are comparing it to the predecessor(s).
Diablo 1 had no predecessor, so there was nothing to really compare it to. And Diablo 2 just didn't change anything whatsoever.

If it had had an art style very similar to D3's since the start, no one would be complaining about it now.
People don't like change.

You pretty much made my point.

I do think that people will call developers on incongruent mood and tone regardless of historical context though.
