3.9 Magma Orb Deadeye - 7 chains, deathless Uber Elder & Sirus, kill metamorphs offscreen



T16 & Uber Elder showcase

Magma orb deadeye has been my favorite all-around character this league. 7000 HP with Divine Flesh & 85% chaos resistance, Acrobatics, and 1.5mil unflasked shaper DPS. This build clears maps very quickly and can easily fight dangerous bosses, including metamorphs, by shooting from offscreen. I have cleared all Metamorph content, including deathless T8 Sirus and Uber Elder fights.

I use wands with projectile speed for clearing, and wands without projectile speed for single target. Magma Orb is in a pseudo 6.5link glove so I can use Kaom's Heart.

This deadeye version has the best map clearspeed. You could also feasibly build this as an Elementalist for maximum single target DPS, or as a chieftain for maximum tankiness.

Build Mechanics
Offense

Every time Magma Orb bounces, it can hit the enemy an additional time. Therefore, Magma Orb benefits heavily from slow projectiles and increased area of effect, because both of these stats allow Magma Orb to overlap its bounces on an enemy. A large sized boss can easily be hit by a single Magma Orb 2-4 times.

In order to ensure maximum bounces, your single-target weapons must have 0 projectile speed. However, I do recommend having a second set of weapons that do have %projectile speed on them, so that you can clear maps faster.

Defense

Leech: Obtained via Gloomfang as well as a notable granted by Glorious Vanity jewel (You will have to keep trying different Glorious Vanity jewels until you find a notable with fire leech)

Resistance: Use a Glorious Vanity jewel in the socket below Pain Attunement. This grants the Divine Flesh keystone allowing you to stack up to 85% chaos resistance. If you can achieve this much chaos resistance, you end up taking 25% less elemental damage, so it is very powerful.

Acrobatics and Phase Acrobatics: Dodge/spell dodge. Don't get Energy Shield gear.

Leveling Guide & Skilltrees
Level up with Shrapnel Shot. At level 12 pick up Toxic Rain and aim for the following links: Toxic Rain - Mirage Archer - Void Manipulation - Vicious Projectiles. Use a Quill Rain or Storm Cloud bow if you can afford it. Use Withering Step to help you kill bosses and clear maps faster. Kill all bandits in act 2.




After level 50 start moving towards the Witch side of the skilltree. Switch to Magma Orb after obtaining Merciless Lab at around level 70(Gathering Winds -> Ricochet). Use any wands with spell damage or fire damage on them. Buy a cheap Kalisa's Grace gloves and socket in Magma Orb - Inspiration - Intensify - Elemental Focus.


For bosses make sure you debuff with Wave of conviction - curse on hit - proj weakness - combustion.


Skilltrees


In order to optimize dps, you should prioritize buying these items in the following order (see "Budget Gear" section for more detail):
  • Gloomfang
  • Gloves with Slower proj & Faster casting. (May craft on +aoe gem levels, don't worry about multimodding until later)
  • Wands with % proj speed for clearing
  • Single target wands without %proj speed (Shade of Solaris is a cheap option right now)
  • Ring with life gain on hit for spells
  • Kaom's Heart
  • Circle of Anguish
  • Glorious Vanity

Budget Gear
You can still get close to 1mil dps and decently tanky with less than 1 ex invested. Note - these are all prices of items in mid-league Metamorph. During league start the prices of items may be very different.

Wands can range anywhere from 1c to multiple ex. A nice entry level wand is shade of Solaris which is just 10c. Make sure you have 2 wands with projectile speed for clearing maps, and 2 wands without projectile speed for killing bosses.

In the leveling guide he shows the equipment upgrade sequence and Circle of Anguish is one of the last items.

I don't get why you take pain attunement since you are not in low life ?
Did i miss something ?
Isn't the pierce on the gloves counterproductive? As far as I know, anyone who uses chain never uses any source of pierce because projectiles first have to pierce for them to be able to chain

Magma Orb is unable to pierce, so the pierce mod does not affect me at all. The reason pierce is on the gloves is because it comes along with the +1 projectile gems mod when crafted.

I see you stack a lot of casting speed on your tree/items. Is that the preferred damage stat for this build because it makes mapping smoother or because it increases dps the most?

If I get a 2xAnger mod watchstone do you think its worth using Anger over say skitter/aspect? I saw a post on reddit where aspect of the spider apparently tanks your FPS so I am looking for alternatives.

AoE craft on helm worth considering? Or does the +50% AOE ascendancy + unique jewels mean you dont really need to go out of your way to get +AOE%?

Do you think its worth using Awakened Controlled Destruction if you find one?

Assuming survivability isn't an issue, to maximise damage do you want to be point blank with the enemy?

1) Both. The build already has so much %increased damage that you only get a small benefit from obtaining it on jewels, so might as well get cast speed for smoother gameplay.

2) I heard that bug only occurs with AMD graphics cards. I prefer spiders and skitterbots for the slows they provide. But Anger is also a great option especially if paired with Watcher's Eye. You can also get fire leech from watcher's eye.

3) We already get so much AoE from tree + ascendancy + magma orb jewels + intensify support that 10% AoE on helm won't make a noticeable difference.

4) I would rather use awakened elemental focus. I tried controlled destruction but I had trouble critting often enough to keep up elemental overload while mapping.

5) Actually, the highest dps occurs on the 7th bounce (you get 1.6mil dps for the 7th bounce). However, you want the enemy to be somewhere in the middle, so that you can get as many overlapping bounces as possible. Therefore, you want the enemy to get hit somewhere around 3-4 bounces.

Having a lot of fun with this build just respec'd into it at level 70. Still getting used to the flask/clear mechanic, find myself running out of mana a lot but the damage feels nice with even the shit gear that I have right now. Once I get gloomfang I'm sure it will be much nicer. Thank you for this!

Started playing this build, currently 66 and feels really smooth.

What do you think about Forbidden Taste? If you have 85% chaos resist, that means FT only deals 1.2% chaos dmg in life, which is easily mitigated by regen/life leech but gives you a much stronger oh shit heal in return. You lose bleed immune but if you run corrupted blood immunity on an inevitabilty (easy enough to do) it should be fine. Also frees up your Quartz flask slot.

Also how about Vaal RF? A bit of extra damage with minimal investment.
