[3.9] 🌿Ultimate Poison Pathfinder - All attack poison skills - All content & Map mods - Videos

Hi and welcome to my Ultimate Poison Pathfinder - All attack poison skills build guide!
This is my 4th build so far and prolly the best one.

3.9 UPDATED

First I want to say that build is very much inspired by Mathil's Viper Strike build from 3.7 league. I liked the attack poison based play style and wanted to push it to the next level in dps with totally different defenses. He did a great job by scaling that build the right way. Thanks Mathil! (no pun intended)

If you want to go fast and clear even faster, delete bosses, be safe like the Juggernaut and delve the mines, this is a build for you. Poison the Atlas! xD

Guide will cover all 4 attack poison skills Venom Gyre, Cobra Lash, Pestilent Strike (the best melee skill in the game atm) and Viper Strike.
Both ranged skills (VG/CL) use same passive tree and both melee skills (PS/VS) have their own. Same gear is used for all skills.
You can use any of the 4 poison attack skills pretty much with just gem swaps. So jump strait ahead to the Build Summary, Skill comparison and Video showcase sections to see which skill do you like the most and how this build performs.

Please read full guide before starting the build.

Check out my new build for 3.9, Torstein's Icebreaker - Glacial Hammer - Sleeper end-game crusher

Wish you many fun hours of play in 3.9 Metamorph league!

Build Summary
Spoiler

Stats required:
*111 Strength
*197 Dexterity
*111 Intelligence

Pros & Cons
+high damage
+great clear speed
+all content viable
+ignite, chill, freeze, shock, scorch, brittle, and sap immune
+flask regeneration (Pathfinder)
+very well rounded defenses
+every map mod possible
+very fast poison ramp up time
+zoom zoom
+can facetank almost anything with (Vaal) Molten Shell active, Shaper slams, U. Elder slams, ring, Phoenix Blast, U. Atziri's Flameblast...
+excellent delver

*dangerous map mod "Monsters have a 65% chance to avoid Poison, Blind, and Bleeding". Basically what this does is, it cuts your damage by 65%. Don't worry I even did juiced T16 with it.

*like all attack builds, it really starts to shine with decent gear and higher levels. Don't expect to invest 3ex total and "poison the Atlas" no no

-vulnerable to damage over time
-not a mindless build
, requires some adjustment time to be mastered but it will keep you interested and rewarded!

☠️ Comparison between poison skills
Spoiler

Cobra Lash (ranged)
Cobra Lash is introduced in 3.8 as an attack skill that fires chaining (5 chains by default and up to 8 with helmet enchant) projectiles that deal chaos damage with a chance to poison. While chaining it can hit and poison same enemy multiple times with one strike and has the best clear speed, but it's on the lower end single target dps compared to others.

Venom Gyre (ranged)
It's a chaos/poison projectile skill that returns to you poisoning target both times but deals 75% less damage on returning. Projectiles you catch on return will be stacked (30 max) until you use Whirling Blades and release them in a circle.
Venom Gyre is a combination of Spectral Throw with a twist and poison stacking. It has the unique ability similar to the miners to stack up damage(projectiles) before the fight begins and release them with Whirling Blades. This is a great way to jump start your poison ramp since you can hit bosses this way multiple times at once!

In the video section you have the link to see this effect.

Ideal fighting mechanic is shooting > whirl > shooting > whirl... That way you are making use of stored projectiles.
Also when fighting bosses if there is a wall behind them it will shorten the travel of the projectiles and returning projectiles will hit faster resulting in better dps.

Pestilent Strike (melee)
is a true melee namelocking skill that has secondary debuff similar to the Infernal Blow which explodes enemies and deals secondary chaos damage to the surrounding enemies based on the amount of poison damage that primary had on itself. This and Pathfinder's poison proliferation will result in a chain reaction that can wipe out whole lanes of monsters and bosses caught in it.
Overall for me this is best balanced skill in terms of single target damage and clear speed. Imho it's the best melee skill in the game atm.

Viper Strike (melee)
Is a well known poison skill and it's recently buffed. It can achieve insane poison stacks due to almost double poison duration compared to other skills and attack with both weapons at the same time (like viper fangs). It's on the top end of single target dps but on the lowest end of the clear speed.

All skills are very good, can do everything and are pleasant to play. It comes down to your own preference. My suggestion is to try all 4 and lock on to your favorite one.

What is "poison" & how poison build is scaled
Spoiler
Main way of dealing damage with this build is with poison ailment. Poison deals chaos damage over time and it stacks, so the more poisons you inflict to an enemy the more damage you will deal. Poison also has duration time it's affecting the enemy. Roughly speaking damage scaling goes like this:

single poison damage * attack speed * duration time of the poison = total damage

So you need to primarily scale the poison damage itself. Attack speed to hit as many times and duration time of the poison.

Duration time of the poison is a window of time in which you can stack your poisons before the first one expires. This window has to be reasonable in real world situations, so scaling it to unreasonable amounts (10-15 seconds or even more) will in Path of Building give unrealistic total damage like you were hitting all that time and disappointing results in game.

🛡️ Build defenses and defense concept
Spoiler

My primary idea for this build was to convert massive amount of evasion to armour so build can have good physical mitigation and make use of best guard skill in the game Vaal Molten Shell.
To make this work properly and to be easy to put together I give special thanks to exile
"
Viktranka wrote:
thanks dude!
for crucial advice to use Perfect Form body armour.

Cornerstones of the defenses are

and
Iron Reflexes keystone.

- ~45K armour thru evasion conversion, Iron Reflexes
-50% passive attack block chance (for melee) & 24% (for ranged skills)
-Phase Acrobatics (30% spell dodge)
-Arctic Armour, 13% reduced phys damage taken from hits and 12% reduced fire damage taken from hits (while stationary)
-Elemental ailments immune
-Fortify
-Molten Shell and Vaal Molten Shell
-Aspect of the Spider slows enemy movement by 30%

When you activate your Jade and Witchfire Brew flasks you gain massive amount of armour and then you activate (Vaal) Molten Shell to "snapshot" armour that flasks provide.

This is a Vaal Molten Shell buff and roughly speaking your extra life while active.
Molten Shell and Vaal Molten Shell needs to be casted manually because if you put it on CWDT setup and you have Vaal active, CWDT will override it with regular Molten Shell and you don't want that.

Items
Spoiler

Weapons
Spoiler

Best weapons for this build will be fossil crafted min item level 83 Imperial Claws. You can buy them or craft them. Claws like those above cost between 1-2ex each on the market and I did all content with them.

They can be easily crafted just with Aberrant and Corroded fossils with Potent resonators. After getting:
1. 60% chance for Poisons inflicted with this Weapon to deal 100% more Damage
2. Adds (47–72) to (98–123) Chaos Damage
just craft suffix "10-15% increased attack speed" on the bench and you are set.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example of a perfect claw for the build would look something like this. Onslaught mod is just a nice add-on for mapping. :)

To craft perfect claws you will use 3 fossils: Aberrant, Corroded and Shuddering with the Powerful Resonators.

Mods that your are looking for on a claw are these (in order of importance):
1. 60% chance for Poisons inflicted with this Weapon to deal 100% more Damage
2. Adds (47–72) to (98–123) Chaos Damage

3. Attack speed
Claw you want will have all those 3 mods.

Ideal claw will have those 3 and a free prefix! When you get claw like that you will craft on the bench
"+(18-20)% to Chaos Damage over Time Multiplier"

So the bottom line about claws:
1.Imperial base min item level 83
2.Claw mods in order of importance:
-60% chance for Poisons inflicted with this Weapon to deal 100% more Damage
-Adds (47–72) to (98–123) Chaos Damage

-attack speed
4th most important is +(18-20)% to Chaos Damage over Time Multiplier
-----------------------------------------------------------
Intermediate version will have "adds Chaos damage" and "60% chance for Poisons inflicted with this Weapon to deal 100% more Damage"
Budget version of a claw is The Wasp Nest unique claw

Body Armour
Spoiler

6L The Perfect Form, unique body armour
This is the best in slot body armour that supports whole defensive concept of the build.

Other good body armour would be Farrul's Fur if you want to go with more dps.
------------------------------------------------------------
Budget 6L evasion based armour
Look for this stats:
-evasion (dex) base
-as much "to maximum life"
-resistances

Helmet
Spoiler
Some examples

Rare crafted evasion based helmet.
Before crafting i suggest that you buy helmet base (min item level 74) with the enchant on it.

Good helmet enchants are:
For VG
-Venom Gyre has 20% chance to inflict Withered for 2 seconds on Hit

For CL
-Cobra Lash chains 3 additional times (great for clear speed)

For PS (not much of impact, totally optional)
-Pestilent Strike has 20% increased Area of Effect (better for clear speed)

For VS (not much of an impact)
-40% increased Viper Strike damage

Craft helmet base that has desired enchant with Pristine,Abberant fossils and Potent resonators.
Stats to look for when crafting:
- 70+ "to maximum life"
- Nearby Enemies have -9% to Chaos Resistance
- some resistance

----------------------------------
Budged version is any rare evasion based helmet with high life and resistances

Gloves
Spoiler

Best damage gloves are Fenumus Weave unique gloves.
--------------------------------------------------
Budget version are any rare gloves with life, resistances and attack speed or Embalmer unique gloves.

Boots
Spoiler

Rare boots with highest total life (life + strenght) you can get, resistances and free prefix.
Craft hybrid mod "increased movement speed & chance to Onslaught for 4 seconds on kill.

Amulet
Spoiler
Examples:

Best end-game ammy would be multimoded min item level 80 Elder amulet.
How to craft one:
Buy elder base min item level 80 amulet.

1. Use Scour orb then Transmutation to make item magic.
2. Spam Alteration orbs until you hit "+(13–16)% to Chaos Damage over Time Multiplier"
3. Use Regal orb to make item rare.
4. Use Annulment orb until you are left only with "+(13–16)% to Chaos Damage over Time Multiplier" mod. If you were unlucky and you removed this mod return to step 1.

5. If you have only "+(13–16)% to Chaos Damage over Time Multiplier" mod on your amulet and it's rare (yellow) craft "Can have multiple Crafted Modifiers" on the bench.
6. After multimod craft the following mods on the bench:
Adds (11-15) to (23-27) Chaos Damage to Attacks
"Non-Channelling Skills have -(9-8) to Total Mana Cost" and be able to run any map mod in the game
+(41-55) to maximum Life

You will be left with open suffix. That gives an option to use new Exalted orbs on the amulet to get one more extra mod.

--------------------------------------------------
Budget version, any amulet to fill your attributes, life and resistances. Craft prefix "Non-Channelling Skills have -(9-8) to Total Mana Cost".

Rings
Spoiler

Two stone rare rings to fill your resistances
Stats to look for:
-life
-resistances
-accuracy (min +300) on both rings is a must

Rings should have free prefixes to craft "Non-Channelling Skills have -(9-8) to Total Mana Cost"! You need to craft this on both of your rings!

Belt
Spoiler

Preferably Stygian Vise with high life and min 80 total resistances.

Budget one, Leather or Heavy belt with high life and min 80 total resistances.

Jewels
Spoiler
2 rare jewels, stats to look for:
- increased maximum life
- increased attack speed/attack speed with claws/ with one handed melee weapons
- increased damage with poison/with claws/with one handed weapons
examples:

One corrupted jewel like this one will get you immunity to Corrupted blood, which with 20 stacks can melt you in split second if you are not careful.
Just 5% life and the corrupted mod are worth the jewel slot.

Abyss jewel for the belt, something like this:

Watcher's Eye jewel with "+#% to Damage over Time Multiplier while affected by Malevolence"

Flasks, important!
Spoiler

-Catalyzed/Panicked Eternal Life flask of Staunching (bleed immune)
-Quicksilver flask of Warding (Curse immune)
-Alchemist's Jade flask of Reflexes/Iron Skin (Defense is built around this flask. Get it as soon as possible!!!)
-Witchfire Brew unique flask (look for higher increased damage over time during flask effect)
-Coralito's Signature (look for higher increased duration of poisons during flask effect)

Aspect of the Spider
Spoiler
In high end build version you will have it on your gloves (Fenumus Weave).
If you can't get the gloves you can beastcraft it on any rare item that has a free suffix. You won't be able to use Aspect without Enlighten level 3 gem.

Ascendancy
Spoiler

Ranger - Pathfinder
Why Pathfinder and not Assassin? Pathfinder has great synergy with poison skills, flasks and defenses. She enables you virtually 100% flask up time, pushes further clear speed thru proliferation of the poison, scales well poison itself and provides elemental ailments immunity.

Assassin on the other hand will have little more damage and can on par with defenses with more investment but will have noticeably less clear speed (no poison proliferation) and no flask regeneration, which can be crucial in boss fights with multiple stages.

Overall my money goes on Pathfinder.

Get ascendancy points in this order:

1. Nature's Reprisal
30% increased Chaos Damage
When you kill a Poisoned Enemy during any Flask Effect, nearby Enemies are Poisoned
Chaos Skills have 50% increased Area of Effect

2. Master Toxicist
10% more Chaos Damage with Attack Skills
Poisons you inflict during any Flask Effect have 40% chance to deal 100% more Damage
You lose Virulence 50% slower
10% of Physical Damage Converted to Chaos Damage
Gain 10% of Physical Damage as Extra Chaos Damage

3. Nature's Boon
6% reduced Elemental Damage taken
Flasks gain 3 Charges every 3 seconds
20% chance for your Flasks to not consume Charges

4. Master Alchemist
Immune to Elemental Ailments during any Flask Effect
40% increased Elemental Damage during any Flask Effect
20% chance to Freeze, Shock and Ignite during any Flask Effect

Leveling
Spoiler

Leveling can feel little slow early until you finish first Lab, then start investing into poison nodes. From that point it's a zoom zoom leveling.

Useful leveling items:
-Tabula Rasa, i suggest you start with
-Praxis, use it from level 22 so you don't have mana problems until you get leech!
-Goldrim
-Wanderlust

Claws for leveling:

From level 12-26 Wildslash and start using Venom Gyre (dual claws from now on)
From level 26-34 Al Dhih (you can skip this one cause it's 10c)
From level 34-60 Mortem Morsu (will carry you easy till level 60)
From level 60 onward The Wasp Nest

Rest of the leveling gear should be rare with priority on life and resistances.
If you can't get unique claws get ones with most attack speed and physical damage that you find along the way.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gems for Venom Gyre/Cobra Lash

start with Viper Strike - Lesser Poison Support
level 5 start using Cobra Lash - Lesser Poison support
OR
level 12 start using Venom Gyre - Lesser Poison support
add Unbound Ailments Support and Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support at level 8. Remove Poison support.
add Vicious Projectiles Support and Deadly Ailments Support at level 18
add Added Chaos Damage Support at level 31
swap Lesser Multiple Projectiles Support with Greater Multiple Projectiles Support at level 38

add Vile Toxins Support at level 38 if you want extra damage on single target
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Gems for Pestilent Strike/Viper Strike

start with Viper Strike - Lesser Poison Support
add Ancestral Call at lvl 4
add Melee Physical Damage Support & Deadly Ailments Support at level 18
swap Viper Strike for Pestilent Strike at level 28 (if you want Pestilent)
add Added Chaos Damage Support at level 31
swap Multistrike Support with Lesser poison support
add Vile Toxins Support at level 38

use Melee Phys damage instead of Ancestral call for bosses

You will have to use freeze immunity flask until you finish Uber Lab.

When you finish A Fixture of Fate quest
Act 3
Siosa
buy Molten Shell gem. Start using Molten Shell when you spec into Iron Reflexes keystone and get Jade flask.
Also buy Spell totem support, Wither and Multiple Totem support gems.
Wither totem will give significant boost to damage VS bosses.

Amulet anointment
Spoiler
For Venom Gyre anointment that has the most benefit for the build is "Piercing Shots" because it saves 3 passive points. It requires Black, Opalescent and Silver oil combination.

For Cobra Lash anoint amulet with Corruption.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For Pestilent Strike/Viper Strike best damage amulet anointment is "Corruption" node. You will need 1x Crimson and 2x Black oils.

Just skip acro, buy perfect form (1 week into the league and it's already down to 15c lol), spend 2 points on iron reflexes (meanwhile you saved 5 by not speccing acro / phase acro) and you get all the bonuses of "increased evasion" transformed into armor, fat molten shell, and spell dodge.

I don't think it makes gearing restrictive, on the contrary, you can use either evasion or armor bases, and hybrid armor + evasion are even better because the sum of the 2 usually exceeds the amount you get from a pure item.

I used that trick last season because I was tired of evasion based gameplay which is 9 out of 10 times nothing happens but when something in the end manages to hit you, you're insta dead. And basalt flask costs too many charges per use even for a pf. Deshret's jewel (brutal restraint) is also harder to get now that legion is 10% chance to meet. So most of the anti 1-shot means have downsides.

That Acro from Perfect Form in PoB shows that you are right. Are you sure this works? If it does it's a fantastic idea!
Char will lose some life but wow, I can push it to 40k armour this way!

I meant that Zodiac Leather is kinda expensive now, for whatever reason...

Ah fuck... :( tnx for noticing that xD lmao

Feel free to start leveling. I made "this" build 3.7 for Viper Strike after I saw what Mathil did and how he scaled it. I managed to pull out ~35% more damage than him.
In the end i decided not to post the build because it was melee and required mandatory 2 gem swaps to map (it was impossible to play otherwise), and when you switch to full single target gem setup you would miss half the strikes if you are not positioned perfectly.
Venom Gyre has 0 of those problems and compared and makes flatout double dps compared to the last league Viper Strike, which was very potent btw. I can show you all pastebins if you want to compare them.
Skill itself feels amazing!

I am just concerned about 1 thing though. Without Acrobatics anything that is going your way will hit you and without stun immunity you would be very prone to eating stuns although very tanky. Idea is fantastic I will just have to test it when i get currency.
