What is dragging the game down?
Played the Amazon, it was merely all about the play style. Well, this ain't Skyrim but I do hope there's tons of loot to enable a LOT of costume customization.

" Hm, how come you didn't notice that no matter how you equip the Templar he is always wearing a skirt beneath i.e. no pants...I wouldn't mind that with a young athletic guy but with geriatric geezers, eww. Last edited by metamag#3876 on Jan 15, 2012, 2:33:07 PM

This is an interesting thread. While there is something to be said for having customization in how your characters look, or what sex they are, you need to realize that we're trying to tell a story. Wraeclast is an ancient island with an ancient history, and the characters that you're playing there fit into that history.
All of them are exiles from a nearby sister continent called "Oriath", with a specific individual past. They're exiles on Wraeclast for a reason, not just marooned on its beaches by accident. Because each character has a backstory, it makes no sense for them to be customizable, as far as the narrative story goes. The Templar is an old, wizened man because that's the consequence of his story. He's was a member of Oriath's religious warrior order for decades, before he made decisions that resulted in banishment. The Templars of Oriath are older, monastic, and male by definition, so it would make no sense for the Templar to be young, or different in appearance. We've tried to make the characters in Path of Exile diverse enough that everyone can find someone who appeals to them. We have a bulking brute of a man, a slim, handsome blademaster, a delicate but powerful spellcaster, a stealthy, athletic archer and a wise, elderly warrior of might and virtue. We also have an unannounced sixth class that people are going to love. All of these classes fit into the lore of Wraeclast and Oriath, and all of them have a specific tale to tell. By allowing too much customization, in appearance and sex, we dilute that story, and risk making the characters too generic. I hope that you understand our decisions based on this feedback :) |

Maybe I'm crazy but, I think the Templar looks freaking great, in fact, I think he's one of the best looking characters. And as previously stated by other posters, these type of games normally have next to no character customization so, the lack of it in this game is not an issue at all. Also, it's F2P and other skins will be available in the cash shop so as long as you aren't a Scrooge, you can at least revert to that to change your appearance. I guess I didn't really add anything to the discussion but, that is my view on the matter.

For what it's worth, I think the character designs are excellent and when I saw the TotalBiscuit vid I immediately thought I wanted to go for the Templar! In fact the general art direction for the entire game is great imho.
As others have pointed out, the customization in this genre comes from the massive amount of loot you can find. This is the way it has always been and it works great. Stop confusing this with something like Skyrim. |

People should be able to customize their character to their liking...
Thats your character not someone else and its nice to be somehow connected with that specific character... At least make an option to customize characters looks inside its own class... Why does a marauder has to look like a Māori? can I have a bulky hairy viking type char at my side? or maybe a blonde witch?. That is not a drastic change for their story or anything...right? |

" while i anderstand the concept something doesn t fit together: Since any class can be anything wanted, since there is no restriction in weapons or skills, there is not much place for a character lore in my opinion. You can be an old templar and play archer... What make me prefer playing a templar if i can use the marauder and take all the templar skill tree? If it s just about the story, because it s an ARPG, no one care really, most important is the ambiance in those games. Forum pvp
