What is dragging the game down?

In my opinion it is a very bad character design decision.

Specifically, if you want to play as a mage you have to play it as a very old bald guy in a skirt.

Given how much appearance customization other such games have this is very surprising, since people spend a lot of time customizing their character and a lot of gameplay enjoyment depends on it.

It's such a turn off...I wish GGG would rectify this, it really detracts from enjoyment of the game.
The lack of character customization can be a major turnoff to some.
Maybe they change it before the game goes public.
But thats not soo important to me.
Are you dissin' the templar, bro?

Disregard witches, aquire currency.

Real mages obviously are old and got beards!
There are two kinds of people, hunters and their prey.

Let me assure you, I am one of the hunters!
Would it really be such a hard thing to add character customization later on? They may have more important gameplay issues to address first.

Here is what male mage in Diablo 3 looks like.
(click on the male gender icon)

It would have been a lot better and made more story sense if you had a young handsome mage, an apprentice, after all you level up your character from zero, don't you?

By the gods of Oriath.

Who, with a sane mind, would exile a jung innocent boy to the cruel nature of Wreaclast !

Explain that. Why would someone young make more sense in a story than someone older? Also a templar makes more sense to me if he's old. Wraeclast is a place for criminals. Your D3boy mage there look like he's just out of the womb. Also I wonder what kind of games you refer to, that have this kind of customization. D2 didn't even have a male sorc of any kind, and people pay ridiculous prices for special items there. This is a hack'n'slash game. If you need a character, that looks like you want yourself to look, to immerse yourself in a game, this game isn't for you. Also it has been stated a many times by the devs that gender options will cost a shitload of money, the last character isn't even finished.

Spoiler
Go play a korean grinding mmorg if you want androgynous males to play with
D2 gave you 1 look per class. D3 gives you 2 looks per class. I'm not sure where you're getting this idea that all arpgs have huge amounts of character customization (or any at all). At least PoE will feature alternate character skins and such in the cash shop.

I guess you could be talking about rpgs like Skyrim but that's a completely different genre.
