How California Leads the world in education

"
It departs from the traditional A to F scale in which students receive F’s for scores below 59 percent. Instead, the scale awards F’s only for scores below 20 percent.

"
Cotati-Rohnert Park school administrators say the change reflects a national movement to encourage students to strive rather than demoralizing them with low grades that make success seem out of reach.

Because it's better to feel good than to actually get a good education and California is all about feeling good.
I want cut scenes damnit.

The article talks about a school district, not California (that being said, the whole thing is complete bullshit).

But, what about those poor, special snowflakes who still get under 20%? What about their self-esteem? What about their value to society?

Putting good grades to make people feel good is treating the symptoms and not the disease.

The disease is that people treat those who fail as a inferior class, and after that they make them struggle to have a decent life even if they work hard, just because they won't be professionals or entrepeneurs. If you make failing academically so punishing, the system will eventually start to cheat via grade inflation and other tricks. No one wants to be a wage slave. Destroy the incentive to cheat the system, and people won't cheat.

50 years ago, to live decently you needed to have a minimal education. Right now, even having a college degree won't save you anymore, except if someone can help you economically until some point or you are one of those STEMs (by the way, I'm one, and I'm seeing my brother struggle to study engineering just because you are shit if you don't have a college degree; that's bullshit, some people have no bussiness doing this).

The world has gone to shit, and people allowed it by being generally shitty to each other because "social darwinism".

You know, those jobs used to be for teenagers before a lot of them moved to some unsavory places. The shame for doing that was because there was something else to achieve. Right now people have little to no choice. Blame a poorly thought globalization process or something.

In Greece today it is not that uncommon to see PhD's flipping burgers.

A lot of people in the world won't feel any pity from that, because "socialism" or something (nevermind the IMF economic measures converted a recession into a depression, and that Greece did cut a lot of spending in 2010 and had a tax evasion problem...some people just hate taxes to the point of not thinking on what happens when you don't pay them).

If there is a disaster, expect some international help, but when it comes to debt, people just like to feel superior to you because they are not indebted. My country suffered the same, and it's still being screwed because of that reason (some Hedge Funds are actively sabotaging debt payments and reestructuring for profit).

The world would be a nicer place if we allowed people to fail without starving and being treated like slaves.

I know, it was a campy comment, but it's a point that has to be made. Blue collar workers are treated as inferior beings, and some white collar workers too. It's too depressing to think about it. I'm lucky to have some rare skills that are valuable enough, else I'd end like a lot of people.
