I'm too weak

At one point PoE was referred to as "path of life node". The basic idea being that to survive you would need every life node you could get. That analogy still holds some truth but is less prevalent in the current version of the game.

Stacking %life nodes is a good strategy but is meaningless if you do not have base life to increase. Coral rings have a max of 30 life as a base white item. Leather Belts have a max of 40 life as a base white item. If you come across a Coral Ring or Leather Belt that are maxed or close to max, consider using a Transmute Orb and a few Alteration Orbs/Augmentation Orbs, for an item to carry you for about 10+ levels until you need to start looking for another one.
At end-game levels you will also be looking for white-rarity jewelry with maxed base stats but to use with an Alchemy Orb. So, save those Alchemy Orbs for itemlevel 60+ jewelry.

The game has a good wiki page that can help you find information on just about anything:

It's a large page, because it has so many helpful things. Here are a couple of needles from the haystack:

Sell to the vendor:
Whetstone
chain belt (White, Blue or Yellow rarity) Rarity increases the benefit.
Dagger, Scepter, Staff or Wand.

This recipe will give you a blue quality weapon with added spell damage of somewhere between 10% and 39%.
You would then use an Orb of Augmentation to add a second stat. If both stats are useful, toss that puppy on your character and start killing stuff. If not, do the process again. All of the mats for this recipe are super-cheap and readily available. As a new player you might be tempted to use other currency to further craft, I would warn against it. It would be a waste of currency to craft beyond this point just for a leveling item.
This same Recipe can be used for melee weapons and physical damage, by swapping Rustic Sash for Chain Belt and the melee appropriate weapon.

Simply knowing what quest rewards are available to your class can help greatly. The usefulness of such a list is pretty obvious. http://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Quest_Rewards

Pick up an item with the mouse. While the item is still held in the air with the mouse type /itemlevel
The item level determines the mods an item can have and is an important aspect of crafting. You'll want to familiarize yourself with this more once your a higher level. At which point you'll want to refer to the list of prefix/suffix listed here:
http://www.pathofexile.com/item-data
Where there's one they're bound to divide it right in two.
