Very underrated in my opinion.
fun as hell too.

Agree with the fun factor, but not sure about the underrated bit. Quite a few people have made serious attempts to get this viable in end game, but invariably the conclusion is that the starting base damage is just too low. Any high level base can do better in end game with a lot less investment. If they raised the base damage significantly, it might work.

Everything changes when you have two people using this with maxed out AoE and multiple totems.
Pushing enemies so far away that they are even out of bow range.
want to add Mightflay to the list. Currently doing 8k aoe with a level 35 dagger, next level I will probably be doing 10k. And this is off of a low quality gem 4 link

How did you get passed the arc bitches in the gravicius area with that helmet on. Wtf? By the way you can wear diamond rings without that shitty helmet. Especially cause resists are suffixes and damage mods are prefixes. So any resists on a diamond ring will not handicap your offense.

You see, I actually bothered to build around the helmet. You can get stunned off of elemental damage when you're resists are low =p Especially when you self curse yourself with vulnerability. Do you see where I'm going?

Spoiler

I was playing a crit chance Tempest shield, Blockchance, Cast when stunned character. That means that if I block you, tempest shield goes off with the buff from the helmet, with a high chance to crit the lightning damage. If I got hit, then I would probably be stunned and about 9 spells would go off simultaneously each with a high chance to crit and with life leech attached to a good number of them.

So if a arc spell hit me or a shield guy charged me, I'd get stunned, the screen would like for a second, and then they'd all blow up.

At level 50, I put on Immortal Flesh, which increased my tankiness by a ton.

It was a very good character. If I played in a new league it would be the first one I'd make for magic finding.

I only quit playing it because the next logical upgrade was to switch to CI and to wear an Incandescent Heart, but I was poor at the time. Later I had plenty of currency but it just slipped my mind to gear the character up.

Crest of perandus is really hard to beat. Even if you find a high block shield you're still missing out on that great lifeleech. During nemesis it took me forever to find an alternative since I really wanted to replace it.

Has substantially better evasion/res but still lose 2% block and lifeleech.

You can now get corrupted versions for cheap prices so that makes it quite great for 85+ chars.

Crest is an absolute beast, and an outstanding leveling item for an evasion/block build. I'm only sad I had a mental lapse before Vaaling this one.

So did you just gear yourself in life gear apart from the uniques? Did you use a crest or did you use a rare shield?

Sorry I'm quizzing you about the build, I'm very interested in it.
I tried to have as little armor as possible and just picked up spell damage, life, life regen, and block chance and spell crit.

So I ran around spamming glacial cascade becaues it's decent with crit. And whenever something hit me (or failed to him me) IT WOULD BE PUNISHED. Since it was my first try my glacial cascade dps was only about 2k. But my tempest shield would hit so hard that each time i blocked it would take about half the life of normal common mobs (or outright kill it) and leave them shocked for a couple seconds and that's not counting the cast when stunned bursts of damage.

Beating Piety and Dominus first form of course are difficult without casting multiple curses on them and using portals to refill your flasks a few times. But because I focused on regen and block + spell block, they didn't do quite as much damage as you'd assume.

I was surprised though how easy mervail always was, she barely does any damage at all vs the regen.

All that said, just going molten strike or CoC is plenty simpler and requires less expensive endgame gear. This build starts out cheap but gets expensive towards the end. And that's the problem.

But with GG gear you could just walk around and go afk and kill stuff with your Doryani's leech and 10k ES.
they are not really underrated
by drop too often
I also made a Veil of the Night build. I could facetank merciless Piety and Doms lightening attacks (except hand of god) didnt hurt. What killed me was the Searing bond and Strongboxes (ice nova, ignites you etc)
